From my current list of meds and vitamins... Can anyone tell me what they think may be causing a huge increase in my hot flashes? I went from one or two a day (black cohosh seemed to help), but now with a severe flare, and the medication I'm taking, the hot flashes are waking me up 4 to 5 times a night, and continue throughout the day. They are as equally mentally irritating as the flare up itself! Thanks for your thoughts!

Prednisone x2 per day
Lialda x 4 per day
Hydrocort enema x1 per night
VSL#3 x 2 per day
Black Cohosh x 3 per day
Turmeric x 1 per day
Grape Seed Extract x 1 per day

I've commonly read Prednisone being linked to hot flashes and night sweats. I think the severe flare itself could be causing them. I had night sweats during my first and worst flare and I was on no meds or supplements at all.

From my experience, I'd say Prednisone. I spent months never getting more than 20 minutes of sleep at a time because I was waking up in literal puddles of sweat that often because of that drug.

Pred for sure. I would just be sitting there with sweat dripping down my face. Felt horrible. Slurpees help. LOL

I sweat constantly while I was on pred. I was also hairy which didn't help. It was always the worst in the middle of the night. Such a terrible drug, but you have to taper off slowly. The side effects are temporary.

This may sound too simple, but keep some cool water handy to sip when the flashes bother you. It might also help at night to towel off & change nightclothes if/when you feel really wet. Try not to let it get you down; it's a phase that you'll eventually overcome. / Old Hat (35 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

Someone else who gets HOT FLASHES?!

I had these for years and was sent to every specialist under the sun.

The GI docs I've seen always deny that any sort of 'hot flash' or 'red flushing' is part of UC, but it's been one of my main symptoms, in addition to Tachycardia.

They went away with 5-ASA (oral & suppositories or enemas).

How old are you? I am 49 am have hot flashes from menopause. Black Cohosh helps, but its not a cure all. Try your GYN Doc. I am on Prednisone off and on and I have them with or without the pred. Good Luck. It could just be normal.

Hi, I had these for quite a few years before being diagnosed with UC, but only at night. I was told I was too young for peri-menopause (mid 30's when they started). It wasn't until last year that I realised they seem to correspond to my UC. The only thing that seemed to help me was a change to good quality bed linen (cotton sheets/blankets), ceiling fan on at night, woollen under blanket. I will try some of the suggestions below. Thanks.

I get intense night sweats during flares and while on pred. The worse inflammation for me is always overnight and in the mornings and then it subsides during the day. I'm pretty sure it's a hormonal thing ( obviously with the pred ) or endogenous corticosteroid elevation.... Interestingly I always get night sweats after a weekend bender ( way too much booze ) or when I get some sort of cold / virus. Makes me think it's a detox / immune response in the middle of the night. Either way it's a miserable experience and an anti-restorative part of "sleep".

The prednisone is my best guess. Be sure to monitor your heart rate and blood pressure on prednisone.

Mine started at age 32. I began to have racing heart, hot flushing, face and arm redness with it, more frequent BMs and right sided abdominal pain (R ovary, Appendix, Gallbladder; had many ultrasounds that found little). It took about 9 years for visible blood to show up.

One specialist I saw said she thought I had 'inflammation' somewhere in my body, but didn't know about the Calprotectin test.

Prednisone made me very hot and sweaty.

If you want relief, ask your doctor for an RX of Effexor, at 10mg. It will completely eliminate hot flashes if yours are caused by menopause.
