I think we have the second case this month alone with a very misleading title.... The purpose, solely to grab attention and reads on social media for funding and research support type stuff.
'Hype it up' is the term. In fact a few researchers where just complaining about
this in regards to stem cell research as I noticed it in the news tonight.
In the first case this month it was a similar study claiming (exact words) "Researches may have discovered a cause of Crohn's disease" - and it was in reference to an article about
immune miscommunication between host (people) and b.fragilis. Except the whole thing sort of fell apart when you really read the actual paper.
Same thing occurs in this paper.
John Atiken posted two great responses to the B.fragilis paper after reading it and I would say his response would without a doubt apply here as well. Here is what he said: And you could literally just substitute IBD for Crohn's.
"The late Lewis Thomas, the medical writer once observed that every disease usually has a single cause. It is highly likely that if Crohns is caused by a microorganism then it will not be a diverse and organised group of bacteria but a single genus or species. Microbiological work on Crohns is severely lacking, but papers like the one above show that when the bacteria are looked at, differences been Crohns patients and the normal population can often be seen. What the
CalTech (insert the paper in this thread) paper is showing is very interesting but may also be just the enthusiasm relating to the first stage of a project."
He also stated this "If they now know that microorganisms are involved, why are clinicians further compromising the immune systems of Crohn's patients with powerful immunosuppressants?"
------
In the case of this study it is just in mice and not the first one to make simulated colitis worse by mouse to mouse by transplant of bacteria.
EDIT: However it is encouraging an awesome that finally researchers are coming back around to look at bacteria and the role they may play in IBD... it's about
time.
