Any experience with low-grade dysplasia?

I just saw my doctor for my 2 week followup after my colonoscopy and he told me the pathologist saw low-grade dysplasia. He wants me to get a second opinion to determine if it showed up because I've been in a flare for a few months. I've never heard of dysplasia before. Can anyone shed light on what this could mean? Thanks! confused

Dysplasia is precancerous tissue, it's a concern as its abnormal and can become colorectal cancer in time. Low-grade dysplasia can be monitored on more regular intervals. Low-grade dysplasia is often cause for removal of the large intestine through a colectomy. They'd give you a j-pouch which enables you to poop through your rectum. The alternative is an end-ileo with colostomy bag.

Thanks for the info, John! Does it matter where the low-grade dysplasia is found as to what kind of surgery would be needed? Mine was found in the rectum.

If it's near the sphincter which is needed for bowel control within a j-pouch then it matters.

First thing's first. Get a second opinion for sure, to verify it is infact dysplasia that they saw.
