There's a lot of new folks since the last time this was posted or talked about. It's usa only, unfortunately. They're looking for 10,000 participants and are currently at 9,200.

You get a free 23andMe kit for dna test, ancestry history report, and health report. And you get to contribute to IBD research. I did mine a while back.

Yes guys!! Do this. It's easy, free and can help fellow IBD ers.

Question bout this, I did it a while back when diagnosis was UC.
I don't want the data I gave them to be messed up... I feel really bad
I changed it to cd but the info is all off because I was dx with IBD a year ago but with cd less than 2 weeks ago.

Any suggestions?

Dikid, you could e-mail 23&me and let them know but I wouldn't worry about the data as the similarities between UC and CD are numerous and many folks with UC later have a diagnosis of CD.

Just want to chime in to encourage UC'rs who haven't already done this. Unfortunately the FDA forbade 23&me from giving health reports over 2 years ago. But you can run your data through other programs, usually for a nominal fee. I like nutrahacker because it actually suggests supplements/nutrients which may be helpful if you are predisposed to a certain condition(s). I found out I was positive for one of the MTHFR mutations and changed the type of B vitamins I was taking which ended up improving overall health but did nothing for UC.

They're doing some basic health stuff now at 23andme, fairly recently. Certainly promethease or other sites tell you a lot more.

Ipoop, I've already participated with 23 and me. Also had Prometheus test but I'm not sure I understand it much. Result was definitely Ulcerative colitis. How do I read the reports? What data is significant?

I did the 23andMe IBD study and get updates from the compiled information. The updates are pretty general and my understanding is that they will send more comprehensive information when the study reaches 10,000 participants. Mary

The 23andme results indicated I had a high likelihood for histamine intolerance. I was already on a restrictive diet but tweaked it to avoid high histamine foods and started the overall protocol. It stopped a flare I was in cold and I will start another thread if I continue to see continued positive results in the coming weeks. Just hoping others will get their genetics tested too!

Do 23andme include this in a report or did you pull it via another site? I did 23andme some years ago but don't recall anything around histamine. I'd be really interested to find out more about it.

23andme has limited information. It's mostly countries of origin down x chromosome and y chromosome for the guys. There's some health reports, very basic stuff based on diseases with several known genetic mutations, and traits they can tell like hair color, skin color, baldness and eye color.

Most download their dna analysis and upload it to another site for more detailed info on health. promethease is an example but there's many tools who analyze it.

Anybody have good experience looking into this and using such tools? I've tinkered some but need a rainy weekend to look into it further lol (drought conditions here).

I did a lot of that when I first got the results, promethease, gentic genie, nutrahacker, livewello

It was interesting but nothing conclusive and I saw a lot of people on forums reacting far too quickly to the information. I did so myself at first and tried methylfolate and like quite a few others on here got worse from it. Nutrahacker reports are particularly interesting as you can see side by side one snp recommending less of something and the nextdoor more.

I have a plug-in on firefox (snptips) that highlights snps on a webpage and I can immediately see my results for that snp if it is mentioned in a webpage. For instance there was some research about types of vitamin E being inflammatory for some and the opposite for others and I could see where I fell, same for coconut oil.

I find some of the predicted medication reaction reports in 23andme accurate to my experience.

As I've mentioned before, a lot of the health reports are very out of date (5 years is a long time in genetic research!) , particularly the IBD ones, I suppose there was less investment put into updating them after the FDA ban. Am hoping the IBD reports will be updated soon.

Nutrahacker has a new one regarding how you will react to the different anti-depression/anxiety medications for $75. I'm tempted. I'm on my second trial of a medication and the side effects have been debilitating. I agree with lurker though about one aberration cancelling out another. I only pay attention to the double whammies. I also over-reacted to having one allele for MTHFR, ran out and bought special methyl-B vitamins, which did significantly lower my homocysteine but completely messed up my GERD (too much B increases stomach acid).

The most I learned from 23&me was I am not positive for placebo and I sneeze at light bulbs.
