Rotavirus vaccine for baby and risk to UC mom?

Hi all!

I have a perfect little two month old boy who is scheduled to receive his first Rotavirus (live oral) vaccine this Wednesday. I just read that the parents can catch Rotavirus through baby's saliva and diapers following this vaccine especially if they are immune compromised. I'm on Remicade...just had my second loading dose. Now, I'm nervous that I am going to get sick from my baby if he receives this vaccine. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this or is it hype? Also, he is breastfed so it's going to be impossible to avoid saliva!

You started remicade after you gave birth correct?

I started while I was pregnant so my son was not able to get a live vaccine for the first 6 months after he was born. So he did not receive the rotavirus. And there's no issues with that. The next live vaccines don't come til 1 year.

Yes you need to be careful. I never heard of the saliva but yes it does shed in their stool. So my son just received his chicken pox and mmr at 15 months which are both live. I waited to get them both together so I didn't have to go thru it more than once. I just have to wear gloves when changing his diapers for 7-10 days.

It's your call if he gets the rotavirus to be honest. You'll just need to wear gloves. My pedi told me this vaccine was so not a big deal and I didn't think twice about it.

Thanks, totes! Yes, I started Remicade post pregnancy so I was told that it's safe for him to receive the Rotavirus vaccine in that sense. I hate that this poses a risk to us though, but was told by our ped that it's critical for him to get it. Did you pass on getting your kids this vaccine? Were they ok?

My first son had it because I wasn't on remicade then. I didn't start uc pills til after he was born when I was finally diagnosed.

My second son did not get it. He had no issues. It's really a silly vaccine. It's anti diarrheal. My pedi said it wasn't a big deal at all he didn't get. It's also a 3 time shot. One at 2 months then 4 then 6. And they need to give it at that time line so by 6 months he cldnt get it anyway. I never thought twice ab it. New borns poop so much and it's always funky. Lol.

Edit to say I actually don't think it's a shot if I remember correctly. It's like tube of liquid they squirt in the mouth.

Absolutely. GI said it's safe for baby...didnt mention anything about risks to me. Ped is just pushing the importance of this vaccine. I guess we're going to do it...reluctantly. Hope I don't get sick!

If the GI and pediatrician said to do it than they probably estimated your risks into the decision.

I would double check with your GI. It's totally safe for the baby because he wasn't exposed to remicade but you are immunosuppressed. You will need to take precaution whenever live vaccinations are involved.

I went through this with my baby nephew. His doctor said it was necessary to get the vaccine and Id be fine. My gi doctor already told me I'd never be changing diapers due to the c diff risk so his opinion was still the same with rotavirus. The vaccine sheds in the stool for four weeks so i would definitely wear gloves every time you change your baby. My nephew had it twice already but I waited a month to even touch/hold him after each round of vaccinations. Better safe than sick!
