Hi All,

I am planning to use the canasa suppository during the day instead of bed time. Any idea about how long I should lie down after inserting the suppository.

colonoscopy: 03/16/16, DX Proctosigmoiditis. Lialda 3.6g daily and Canasa suppository (2 times a week). Currently in remission with 1-2 BM.

I used them years ago. If your fortunate enough to not have bowel movements throughout the day I would use after most have completed. I found I could use them at work and not have trouble retaining for a few hours or so. IMO no need to lay down like you need to with a mesalamine retention enema, but that will also depend on other factors related to your disease state and physiology.

Thank you muddytoes, my diagnosis is mild proctosigmoiditis and currently I am having 1-2 bowel moments with no other symptoms.

if what you are doing is working so well, why on earth would you want to try something different ?

Stick with that regimen for maintenance. Once you start to have early symptoms of a flare, use the retention enemas and taper down eventually to the supps if they work for you.

Are you on probiotics and fibre supplements?

No problem retaining them at all- I have used them in the am and it's been 4-5 hours before I had to go to the bathroom. It did give me loud bowl gas, but other than that, it's not as bad as the enemas for sure! Just pop it in and go to work :)

Yes, suppositories and enemas are longest retained when your rectum is empty. If your bms are predictable then take them when you anticipate being empty for the longest timeframe. Oh, and the same goes for when you're typically get gasssy/farty, as those suppositories are shaped like little torpedoes and all you need is a little propulsion... Enemas can become fountains with sufficient propellant... blush

q- Thank you for the response. I use Prescript-Assist 2X and once in a while psyllium seed powder when I eat only meat and no veggies.

You're welcome. Uc can put us all in dark places, and I find a good laugh or even a little smile can work wonders, sometimes.

Yes-
I was taking Imuran and Apriso for a while, then dropped down to just Imuran while in remission. Good luck to you!

To answer your original question...

I get up right afterward and walk around. No need to remain lying down if you insert it in all the way.

I have used them both in the morning and before bed. I personally prefer them prior to bed. The suppositories have a tendency to leak out during the day if you have gas.
