I have heard from more than one source that taken with food glutamine is great for bodybuilders because it helps to build muscle. And when taken on an empty stomach glutamine helps repair intestinal tissue.
On page 168 in his book, 'Dr. Atkins' Vita-Nutrient Solution', Dr. Robert Atkins, the Atkins diet guru, talks how glutamine "maintains the structural integrity of the intestines to such an extent that it is dubbed 'intestinal permeability factor.' No other nutrient is as important for gastrointestinal integrity."
According to Dr. Atkins not only is glutamine effective for healing the digestive tract, (which is what IBDers like us need), but that it also snuffs out cravings for sugar.
But I stopped taking it after more recent studies show that excess glutamine intake can be problematic. But trying it after my most recent flare I found that glutamine seemed to speed up recovery. That is why my signature says I take glutamine ONLY when I feel gut repair is needed after a flare, otherwise not at all.
I am not completely sure. I am going to stop taking it, then start again after some time. And see the results.
I bought it because I started working out, and because I've heard about
it being good for UC.
