I just finished my week of cipro for my kidney infection and I feel worse than ever UP wise. Initially there was a reduction in blood the first few days, but then my BMs started increasing like crazy, a lot less solid BMs and a lot more cramping. I don't know if it's temporary from the cipro or if my UP is getting worse. I'm in the 11th month of this flare and my doctor keeps saying he doesn't want to over treat... But if this continues I can't take it anymore. Currently on 4x800mg asacol and salofalk enemas at night which I haven't been able to retain lately. I was on steroid enemas for a few months but he didn't want me on them long term due to side effects.

How does everyone else react to cipro? Is this normal? Will it get better? I've never experienced depression before but I want to cry all the time from frustration or pain. Can't stay strong anymore.

I am allergic to Cipro based on reactions when taking just one capsule many years ago and pre-UC. Vomiting and D all night. I actually suspect Cipro may be a factor in my getting UC but can never prove it. Some people have wonderful results with Cipro for their UC but there are warnings about even worse reactions than I had, "black box" is the term used.

Have you been taking any probiotics? I am one who would actually improve on cipro, my inflammation and pain always decreased and rectal bleeding stopped. However I always took florastor and culturelle while on it to prevent diarrhea or cdiff because it is a very strong antibiotic.

I have not had cdiff but might be worth a call to your doctor or taking some florastor to see if that calms the D down.

I've been taking 2 florastor daily during the course. I'm wondering if it's regular d or c. diff (which I've never had). Just sent a message to my family doctor for an appointment so hopefully she can shed some light (and hopefully i don't have to wait too long for an appt!)

If i don't feel better in a week I'm going to get in with my GI and demand (probably by crying) that he needs to do something more aggressive. Not sure what the next step is... thanks to this d i can't keep the enemas in. Think I'll just save myself the pain tonight.

I would give it a few days for your gut bacteria to repopulate. I would also double dose your probiotics, remember that the Cipro kills much of the probiotics. Also space the Cipro and Probiotics out to offset more of the probiotics survive.

I am not sure if I am allergic or severely sensitive to Cipro but it makes me cringe up and roll in my bed while holding my stomach. My bleeding worsens on Cipro unless I am on IV steroids at the same time. My gi agreed to never prescribe me Cipro ever again.

For my very first flare(I didn't know it was a flare at the time), ER doc prescribed me Cipro and it went down hill really fast..
If you don't see hope with just Mesalamines(rectal & oral), you need something strong right now right away to stop this flare.

If he knows about the side effects of having you on steroids, he should've known about the Cipro too.
Even FDA said that risks outweigh the benefits of taking Cipro(it's black box listed medication)

I'd take Prednisone over Cipro any day... I just can't handle the pain like someone's stabbing my gut while being on Cipro.

The cipro was prescribed by an ER doc for a kidney infection, so the GI is out of the loop for now on this one. Glad to know it's likely the cipro though and hopefully not the proctitis getting worse. I'm still frustrated that he's not doing more for my flare though.

Yes, you should be upset with your gastroenterologist if you're 11 months into a flare and you feel he isn't treating that flare strongly enough. Certainly cipro is going to upset your system some, but it should soon settle down. UP inflammation can be real stubborn and hard to treat. You've already hit the UP with anti-inflammatory mesalamine and steroids, perhaps it's time to try immunomodulators (6mp, Imuran, azathioprine).

He keeps saying he doesn't want to "over treat" it. Well guess what, maybe I do. Argh.

Maybe stop the florastor and try another probiotic.

Can you retain suppositories?

I have no experience with cipro, but it seems to be the culprit for you at this point.
You definitely should be checked for c.diff.

You could call and ask for antispasmodics....

Hope things improve for you soon....first I think stool tests are in order.

Things slowly seem to be improving. I've switched to align, I ran out of florastor anyways. Going to buy some VSL#3 but I keep forgetting to call Costco to order.
Saw my MD yesterday to do a urine sample to f/u re: kidney infection and UTI. I'm sure a UTI is still present. I told her in no uncertain terms will I be taking another round of cipro. Trying an enema again tonight for the first time in a couple days, if I can't retain I'll go get a box of suppositories - luckily I've got a repeat left.
Also just started tonight doing a glutamine & chia seed concoction to see if I can start healing my intestines and maybe bulking things with more fibre.
