Prednisone vs Gastro Resistant Prednisone

I went to the chemist earlier to collect some more Prednisone. My old tablets were white and just said Prednisone on the box the new ones say Gastro Resistant Prednisone and have a red coating on them.

Is their likely to be any difference?

sounds like uceris. coated to release in colon. can work more topically. may not have as many side effects. may not be as strong since not absorbed.

Hmmmm interesting, the packaging is identical though. Actavis prednisolone tablets vs Actavis Gastro Resistant Prednisolone tablets. No mention of Uceris anywhere.

I'd ring my IBD nurse but she's as much use as a chocolate teapot.

Interesting. It sounds like it is a coated tablet. Perhaps coated but not necessarily extended release like Uceris? I've never seen such a thing. Only had prednisone and Uceris.

It seems like the down side of EC Prednisone is that the absorption is unpredictable.

I've not heard of coated prednisone, but if the box says it's prednisone then I suppose it exists.

Uceris does not come in a generic and would not say it is prednisone. What is the dosage? Uceris comes in 9mg. If you are on say 40 mg then I highly doubt it is acting like a topical as Uceris does. I would ask the pharmacist about it or your prescribing physician.

I did say "like" generic uceris. The steroid in uceris is 4x more receptors then prednisone, do 9mg uceris is like 36mg prednisone.

anyway, sounds like a dose of pred with enteric coating to work with delayed release in colon. There is limited absorption in colon, so it would act mostly topical.

Clipper is another name for Uceris in UK and other countries. I wonder if that is it? Essentially, a standard steroid with a delayed-release coating on it. Less side effects as a result, as the steroid is topical on just the areas that it needs to reach, rather than being a 100% systematic.

The pills are still 5mg with the instructions of tapering down from 40mg weekly. Haven't had chance to get into the pharmacy today but I will tomorrow and I'm going to try and swap them for the 1's I had before.

If the coated 1's aren't absorbed in the same amounts I'd imagine their would be a chance of the change causing a big taper. If at the minute I'm absorbing 40mg and then I swap to these and eg only absorb 20mg?

I don't think it's ER, just coated. You can't get a coated tablet of almost anything & typically there is nothing special about it, except to not upset your stomach or cause peptic ulcers.

Spoke to the pharmacist yesterday and he assured me that the coated pills will work in exactly the same way with exactly the same absorption. He said the only difference is they are easier on the stomach and less likely to cause peptic ulcers.

Still got a couple of days left of the uncoated pills before I switch.

interesting, sounds like the coating is designed to dissolve in the small intestine. This is the only way it could have the same absorption. Not much absorption going on in colon.

I guess it is just durable enough to stay intact in stomach. Can't be a pH release thing because not that much change form stomach to 1st part of small intestine.

Sounds like a better med.
