Spliting Prednasone

Hi,I am new to this site. My daughter Lexi was just diagnosed with UC about 4 weeks ago. She is 14. I know there was a queation about spliting up the steroids earlier or a question similar but I am asking for a different reason. My daughter seems to not have any pain and be almost her old self again for up to 8 hrs after taking her 40mg dose of prednasone. After that she is right back in the bathroom and in pain again. I am wondering if anyone knows if spliting her dose up would help with preventing the pain and bm urgency. Without fail she takes the prednasone and is better an 30 mins to an hour later. I just want to help her. When your child is screaming on the toilet all hours of the day and night you just want to be able to give them something or help them in some way. I am helpless what can I do for her???? I knew nothing of this disease until she was diagnosed. Please help!!!!!

I assume you mean taking 20mg in the morning and 20mg at night or something similar? I know some people split the dose like this to have a more sustained level of prednisone in the body all day. However bear in mind that it might take a few days to adjust to the change and it might not seem to have as strong effects... Also it is normally best to take it in morning because that is when the body naturally produces this hormone and also prednisone is known to cause strange dreams and insomnia when taken before bed. I am not an expert, but if your daughter is still having bad symptoms like urgency, pain and blood with no signs of improvement then she probably needs to be put on an higher dose of steroids or even go to hospital to get things under control. When prednisone is working properly its effects should last all day... It is probably a good idea to check with her consultant/doctor before changing the way she takes the prednisone, it is a strong drug and the dose should not be changed drastically.
