Pain with Cortenemas?

Does anybody have pain when using the Cortenemas? I've been using Mesalamine (rowasa) enemas for years and years. I never feel pain when I use them. Maybe when gas bubble gets generated but that usually pops in there and I'm fine. And even then just a little gut ache. But the Cortenema - I've used them in the past and don't remember having issues.
But the past few times, including right now, after I use one I'm fine for about 10 mins, lying on my left side in bed. Then all of a sudden it starts to feel like a knife stabbing my rectum. Last night I was even nauseated from the pain. I almost got up to use the bathroom but even that seemed like it would be painful. The pain lasts at least 20 mins or more, then finally goes away.

Not sure if it's hitting some inflamed spot and causing pain, then gets past that and I'm fine. I know when I used these back in Sept I was having a lot of diarrhea from antibiotics (no blood this time or last) and wow I had a lot of pain using them.

I just started a 4 week course of them. Not having any blood but my BMs have been up and down, watery or thin or rarely normal at times the past few months (found out my mom is dying of cancer, and my job is also unstable at the moment, so it's been a bit stressful). Saw my GI this week and he said seems like a mild inflammation in the rectum and lower left area. Plus my joints have been killing me lately.

Gee, I've used them for two decades and never had pain. I just try to relax. I also warm it first before inserting (running bottle under warm water so it's not so cold). Usually is very soothing for me.

I wonder if there's a sore or abscess in the most distal part. May be worth asking the Doc to take a look if it persists.

That happened to me with Rowasa, after 14 yrs of successful intermittent use. Gastro said I had topped out of that med & needed to discontinue. My pain felt like the lower left tissue was tearing open, ugh! So if it happens to you again, I would mention it to your prescribing MD. Sorry you have the added stress in your life now. / Old Hat (36 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

I'm wonder if it just hurts more when I have more inflammation near the rectal area. Fri/Sat/Sun it didn't hurt other than a few gas bubbles, and I had pretty normal BMs those days with only 1-2/day. Now last night it hurt a bit again, and this morning I was back to diarrhea as soon as I woke up. And I did feel pretty bloated all day yesterday (certainly not now though!). Hopefully I go back to normal BMs again as it seemed like it was working pretty fast.

I'm thinking maybe you should have stool samples checked to make sure it's not something else going on.

It's a very difficult time for you with all that's happening.....huge hug!

What about sulphasalazine? It might also help with the joint pain.

Could you maybe ask for cortifoam instead and see if it still gives the pain?

Did the doc take a look?

Already left a stool sample last week. Nothing else going on. Blood tests all came out well too, other than my C-reactive protein is a little high (barely, just 0.5 higher than normal). So he said maybe a little inflammation. While pressing on my lower left colon I had some pain, so he said probably that area.

My annual office visit was last week, so I just saw the GI. So he checked all I could without a scope. Next scope is around November. If these aren't helping completely, he did say I could take a mesalamine enema during the day if needed on and off. Just didn't want me taking two of those a day so changed me to the cortenema for 28 days. He said it was too much mesalamine (with the Lialda too) to take 2 meslamine enemas a day. Makes sense I guess. My liver test looks fine though so that's good, it always does though!

One thing, at least the join pain has subsided. So that is nice! Even after a hard workout I didn't have joint pain. So perhaps it's helping that.

Yes, try the mesalamine during the day....you can take tylenol to take the edge off the body pain.

Do you have any bentyl? It might help.

Good to hear you had stool samples done and nothing going on there.

Keep us updated once you start the mes enemas.

I have hycosamine (Levsin). Same thing pretty much as bentyl. I use that for cramping.

I likely won't do mesalamine enemas daily since I leave for work in the morning and not back till evening. But I do work at home twice a week and can do it over lunch those days at least. And on the weekends if needed. We'll see how I feel the next few days. Could have been something I ate yesterday too I suppose.
