Serrated polyposis syndrome

How common is this in UC?

My brother also with UC was diagnosed with this after his last scope after having >30 polpos removed.
I had a scope yestersday, and half way through scope the Reg (who I hadn't meet before) suddenly starts asking me about my family's bowel history. He removed 3 polyps, said one looked like a serrated polyp (I had thought SPS was to do with the number of polyps?) said the polyps were hard to find cause of all the inflammation and bad prep (I know I know, don't ask). So he suspects there could be more, will need another scope once this flare has settled. But will see what histology says.

So anyway, how common is it in UC?

Thanks. Ok that makes a lot more sense to me. That it's a flat polyp, and on the side, so it's about appearance, not just number of polyps like I had previously thought. And now that you mention it, while the Reg suddenly started asking about my family history he was looking at a polyp that was flatter in appearance.

This is only my second colonscopy. Last was a year and a half ago. Was initially diagnosed on a Flexi sig 2 1/2 years ago, while pregnant. And had last Flexi sig in June. I have left sided UC. (Was planned to have colonscopy earlier but surprise pregnancy and subsequent misscarriage altered those plans)

When speaking to the Reg afterwards, he said serrated polypOsis syndrome does increase risk of cancer, and that paired with UC increasing risk, it should be considered down the track (I think (hope) he was talking years) to have my colon removed. At which I maturely pulled some kinda unimpressed face.
Well I won't jump ahead of myself. I'll wait see what histology says, and I'm into the gastro clinic next week to start Infliximab, so I'm sure I'll see the consultant sometime, and I'll find out.

Oh, gosh, - you have been through a lot.

Actually, there was no sign of it at the 3 month follow-up scoping, so... I am going to have a scoping in about 4 weeks and we'll see what that shows. It is possible that even though he didn't actually visually "see" the serrated polyp at the first scoping (it showed up on pathology results) that he had grabbed it and removed it.

He was really puzzled that he could not find it at the second scoping, although he did that scoping with blue dye to show better contrast, and took more than 50 biopsies! So... I am wondering what my March 7 scoping will show.

My GI said some of the same things to me that yours had said. He said that the combination of UC and the serrated polyp was a worry and that maybe I'd just like to plan to have the colon out.... and when I looked horrified, he said, "well, if you don't mind the anxiety of frequent colonoscopies to keep watch over it." By "frequent" he meant yearly - and I had more or less been on a yearly schedule anyway due to this and that.

And... he also strongly recommended Infliximab or one of the other biologic medications to better address any inflammation. I am due to start one of those within the month. It would be great if the Infliximab kept your UC from spreading further! My GI has so much good to say about the potential of that med to take care of inflammation.
