Well after a couple of months deliberation and my consultant liasing with others regarding my other health problems. I have finally started azathioprine (150mg) and have been taking it a week now.

I can't deny that I am scared about all the possible side effects but I have been on steroids for a year and am at the point where I can't reduce them without my symptoms getting worse.

I know aza is slow to act but would just like to know how fast others saw an improvement in their symptoms.

Thanks to everyone in advance for their kind replies and I hope that everyone is as well as can be expected with their UC.

To be honest, I was on it so long ago, I can't remember how quickly it worked. My new doc just told me I wasn't even on a therapeutic dose back when I was on it, so I bet it wasn't working anyhow (which would make sense and explain why I'm where I'm at right now).

I think you've just gotta push the side effects aside and think of the benefits at this point. That's prob why the doc prescribed it. I hear t takes weeks/months to kick in.

On a good note- I never really found that it increased my likelihood of getting sick like it sometimes says.

Expect a minimum of 6 weeks before you get any response. More as typically they start you at a low dose and then gradually increase your dose.

Afternoon, I don't post here much but thought I would chime in. I've been on it for about a year now. I just tapered off of pred about a month ago and I haven't really noticed any side effects aside from one: nausea. I don't get nauseous every time, but if I have a few drinks the night before or take my meds on an empty stomach I can feel a little nauseous for a couple hours. Not the end of the world, but I thought I would share my two cents!

I am currently on Azathioprine and Humira and my life couldn't get much better. Just don't think about the side effects it makes everything easier.

I saw an improvement after 3-4 months. I loaded slowly and only noticed a loss of appetite adding the final 25mg. I'm on it with remicade and feel great!
