Lower back pain/cramps and UC?

Hello everyone

I'm a 28 year old female and I think I may have ulcerative colitis. But I'm wondering about pain location for you all with UC.

I've noticed I may wake up some days feeling like i have my period. Turns out I don't, and with a bowel movement, the feeling goes away. This cramping is felt in my lower back (where I also get period cramps). Can this happen with UC? I keep seeing "abdominal pain" listed. But my pain/ cramping is in my lower back. Mostly on my left side but it can also radiate to both sides. It's at hip level, I guess. Kinda hard to tell. It's just a cramping in my lower back. And I sometimes pass bloody stools or clear-fluid/mucus. Does this sound like UC?

I have an apt with my primary doctor on the 20th, and with a GI on the 5th of May. But to be honest, I'm terrified I have cancer. I've had constipation and diarrhea, very minor blood when wiping, blood in my stool, anal discharge/mucus, some stool seepage (once when squatting I had to wipe because I felt wet down there; sorry if tmi), back pains, weight loss (but I've been on a diet so idk about this one), etc. I'm scared to death right now. Anyone think i have UC or maybe IBS?

I got that same pain when I was flaring.

The only way to tell what you have is when you get a colonoscopy done. It does sound like UC.

YES! I get the same thing. It started when this flare intensified a little - over the past couple of months. That was a new thing for me. It would seem to start after a bathroom trip, and be accompanied by crazy fatigue. I would literally just sit on the couch with lower back/"period" pain for hours - that wasn't my period. It went away as we started treating the flare.

You definitely need a colonoscopy. I was flaring for probably over a year but afraid of the test and avoided going to the doctor. When I finally saw my GI and got diagnosed, my UC had been active for quite some time and spread. The colonoscopy was not nearly as bad as I feared it would be!

Does anyone think this may be cancer? I'm obsessing over the fact that i have cancer. Like, I'm convinced it's cancer and not UC.

I'll see what the GI says. They'll likely tell me i need a colonoscopy. But I'm also scared to death of getting that done.... I'm scared it's going to hurt

A colonoscopy does not hurt. They put you out for it and it takes just a few minutes to do.

Of course anything's possible, but being 28 years old I highly doubt its cancer. Try not to catastrophize too much. Colonoscopy prep is the worst part and it's not that bad. The actual procedure is a piece of cake.

One more question. Has anyone ever experienced tiny (and i mean like a small dot) of blood on the toilet paper when wiping? I'm not talking blood streaking the paper. I usually have very tiny dots of blood. Is this common with UC?

With UC? I'm asking because I see sources saying UC usually has a lot of blood loss whereas I'm having very tiny drops of blood when wiping.

Everybody is different. UC symptoms, while some are common for everyone, some are not. Try not to worry.

YOU DON"T HAVE CANCER - it's worse than that - you probably could have UC and you will have to join our little party here ....... forever - smilewinkgrin

actually, it could get EVEN worse - you could have psoriasis and have to joint that REALLY boring and dull forum -

so see, you might actually be fairly lucky !

We can get cramps and pains due to actice ulcerative colitis inflammation, trapped gas, or trapped stool. Blood on stool is a good cause to have a stool test to look for infectious causes and also have a colonoscopy to investigate for possible IBD.

I'd say colorectal cancer is very unlikely. Healthy individuals don't even have increased colorectal cancer odds until age t0.

We're not doctors. Perhaps you should see a doctor or nurse, describe what you're experiencing and they can help diagnose the cause. The lower abdomen is full of potential pain causers and it's hard to tell what is causing it, yourself. We can get kidney stones, gall stones, have pains from pancreatitis, women can have various uterin pains, joints can ache, and many other possibilities. When in doubt get checked out.
