I just joined, wanted to share my story. I was diagnosed in 2003 with pan-ulcerative colitis (affects the entire colon). I went through lots of struggles for a few years, needed 4 units of blood transfused at some point, and none of the medications that I was prescribed would help at all (except Prednisone). In 2006 I met someone who has UC and she said she'd been prescribed Sulfasalizine. I went through my worst flare during that time period (thats when I needed the tranfusion), and asked a doctor to prescribe me the Sulfasalizine. I needed a hospital stay to recover from the terrible flare that I was in, but sulfasalizine has kept me in remission for about 11 years now. I only need to take two pills in the morning, and I dont take any other meds for my UC (though I take 5mg of Predisone for another condition, so it may help). I know sulfasalizine is one of the oldest medications on the books for UC. but its the ONLY thing that helps me. A GI doc tried to switch my meds once, and after using the new med for a week I started flaring. Went back on Sulfasalizine and never went back to that doctor again. I know everyone is different, but I'm not sure how often doctors look to prescribe sulfasalizine anymore, so I wanted to share my story. Its been a miracle medication for me.
