If we're talking about immunosuppressants in general there's alot of info about their toxicity online.
At least post meds that UC patients actually use - the only med that's used for UC in that list is azathioprine. I've been on its sister med, 6MP, for a year now without any issues. There is about
a 3% chance of getting pancreatitis; I can't put a % to the other risks offhand, but that's what regular blood tests are for while you're on these drugs: if your blood cells or liver are taking a hammering, the blood tests will show that and your doctor will reduce the dose or take you off the drug accordingly. But that's probably not as much fun as saying, "ZOMG immunesuppressants toxicity cancer!!!"
Let's see what other science you've managed to create a mountain out of a molehill over.
/www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2008/022301lbl.pdfBoring. Standard prescribing information leaflet for docs, nothing to see there. The % of adverse reactions are barely higher than for patients taking the placebo.
/ocw.mit.edu/courses/health-sciences-and-technology/hst-151-principles-of-pharmacology-spring-2005/assignments/0208_sulfa_slide.pdfHere is a presentation by Harvard docs and profs. about contradictions of treating IBD with mesalamine.Contraindications, not contradictions. If you're going to slag off science, at least get the terminologies right so you look more like you know what you're talking about
.
Looked through the slides and don't understand the point you're trying to make.Lol the question was are they
highly toxic. Do they hold a long term toxicity load on the body,
not a question about
the % of likelihood to become affected by toxins or how these medications effect YOU personally. I'm not here to debate people's belief systems about
optimal healthcare. To each his own.
OP is interested in trying alternative/holistic methods due to fears of the potential long term toxicity of mesalamine- of which the liver and kidney take a hit. The fact they are taking a "hammering"prove the existence of toxins and given that the typical UC patient's immune system is already in a state of duress, the performance of antioxidants fighting off toxins can become limited over time. OP is also concerned about
having to rely on these meds for life, not necessarily becoming addicted. I mean it's almost the same argument.
There is possibility of renal impairment as that boring FDA leaflet states under warnings and precautions. If you are not satisfied with animal studies- this human trial outlines the potentials of renal failure with the long term use of 5-aminosalicylic acid in IBD patients.
/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2694651/The FDA has mesalamine as risk category B. Almost all IBD medications range from B to X, meaning there is insufficient evidence that they are 100% safe in pregnancy. That fact of uncertainty is enough to deter it's long term use for some people.
I love how my misuse of contraindication and contradiction is being used as a fallacious argument. 'Contraindication’: something (as a symptom or condition) that makes a particular treatment or procedure inadvisable. The term contradiction can still be used validly in this case, because it IS a contradiction that mesalamine is used to treat IBD when it's efficiency relies on the drug targeting the large intestine, but a high % is absorbed in the small intestine. Or the fact that a large % of the pop. are missing the enzyme to properly metabolize the drug. THAT's the point they are trying to make.
No need to get your panties in a bunch. If someone asked me can sugar be toxic to the body, I'd say yes and state the reasons as to how it can be.
Also your experience of toxic megacolon is an effect due to toxin build up, not your body just naturally causing it.
Let each person outweigh the risks by their own judgement without ridicule. Let each person decide how they prefer addressing cause and effect. Some people prefer focusing on managing symptoms while others prefer focusing on eliminating the casual factors. Just FYI- I don't strive to sound like I know what I'm talking about
. This is my understanding based on my studies and information I plan on implementing in my upcoming career. I am always
open to having a fair debate/discussion void of subjective reasoning.
