Hi, Everyone, first time post. Have been reading about UC on your boards due to recent problem with proctitis, probably infectious per colonscopy/biopsies two weeks ago. Put on Canasa BID, but so far that has not been much of a fix.
The colonoscopy findings match the course of the disease. Back in May had a week of escalating diarrhea with mucous, blood, pain, urgency (x20/day), food intolerance. This problem started four weeks after treatment with clindamycin for infection at site of an axillary node dissection (T1A breast cancer). Clindamycin from what I've been told is frequent culprit for C. Diff infections. Was going to hospital for daily radiation treatments when this issue started, so it's likely I was exposed to C. Diff then.
Went to ER, 01May17, at end of that first week of diarrhea. Treated with flagyl and cipro. After antibiotics, things improved but problems returned within a couple of weeks, had stool culture (neg), and since problems were escalating, had colonoscopy 20Jun17. Felt great for two days after colonoscopy on, but again problems returned = frequent urgency, but also constipated, discharging mostly mucous (sometimes clear, sometimes pink or brown tinged), some flatulence, occasional accidents, food tolerance poor, lots of left abdominal pain (pain, pain, and more pain), tired, napping frequently, pain in large joints, can't go out many days due to potential accidents...
As following through with clinicians' plans has been slow and provided little relief, I started researching alternate solutions. Plus I was progressing back to not just pain, pain , and more pain, but surprise accidents...
So I'm posting here because? Reviewing qing dai and other supplements mentioned on the boards and elsewhere, I ordered the CC Herbal and started with a half capsule daily. (Going with a supplier who'd been around a while seemed a good bet, related to quality, a concern often mentioned by contributors.) The CC Herbal has Qing Dai and two other ingredients: Huang Qin and Mu Xiang.
First day, lots of pain, cranky, tired, some diarrhea, and swore I wouldn't take another. But second day, noticed the upper GI tract was very happy, and greater portion of lower abdomen was quieter, so I took another half capsule -- again cranky, but more energy, more relief from pain because stool moving through, less pain the remainder of the day.
Today took the third half capsule this morning, lower GI immeditely a little busier, but less pain. Hoping for the best.
I don't know if Qing Dai or the other ingredients have resulted in the improvement, but I'll keep you posted.
Googling Qing Dai, there is a prospective clinical trial in 2016 for its use with UC patients. The trial included 20 subjects and the authors were encouraged by the outcome. Colonoscopy images are included with the article: https://www.karger.com/Article/FullText/444217.
Per the article, the trial was partially sponsored by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan. Of interest is that the article gives some background on the long-time use of Qing Dai for UC and other medical problems in China (various inflammatory diseases, UC, and dermatosis, such as psoriasis).
Others at HW have cited a Qing Dai clinical trial with fewer subjects and perhaps the trial is at the end of this link?... https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3645393/
Well, enough said.
Cheers to all and thanks to all who contribute to Healingwell.
The boards have provided a fast education on proctitis and colitis for me -- what to ask, what to expect. Wasn't receiving much information from providers.
Guess the business at hand for us all all is to hope for the best and carry on.
