I thought this was a super interesting read for a whole to of reasons. Wanted to share with others to whom it may be of interest. Heavy real garlic use gets me every time.

This was a pretty cool read and may explain this reoccurring sensation I've experienced when eating very sugary desserts.
I attribute a Belgian waffle to be the final nail to my gut coffin, because immediately after eating it- I felt the strangest sensation (like being high on weed or acid) my ears ringing, temperature/vision going crazy etc. I eventually vomited/had diarrhea and felt better, but ever since that experience my digestion was never the same. 2 weeks later dx'd with UC. This happened twice again after consuming baked goods resulting in flare ups.
Always knew there was a serotonin uptake in the gut but seems like those EC cells are truly connected to our nervous system, so much so that it can induce a psychedelic reaction lol.

Interesting to see some progress in identifying the mechanism of these important regulatory cells.

(Enterochromaffin cells are not in the stomach, so immediate food reactions have nothing to do with those cells.
Serotonin that is in the gut cannot cross the blood-brain barrier. )

Intriguingly, clinicians already use SSRI's (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors), which affect serotonin levels, to treat IBS, suggesting there may be a link between the disease and the serotonin system. Bayrer, a pediatric gastroenterologist who works with children with IBS, hopes understanding EC cells and other gut sensors will help researchers understand and improve such treatments.

But SSRIs target serotonin in the brain, not the gut.

Can only speak for myself, but SSRIs have never stopped my stomach from cramping miserably.

That's what I was thinking. Coincidentally I received a message from Lemon (old Member on here) - she says she keeps things under control and is still in remission - the catch; she has to stay on both Humria and the Amino Acid Protocol. If she drops either she regresses. Fascinating.
