Yeah, NC, I agree......I added strength to my routine awhile back and had decided to go with triathlons (triathletes even LOOK much better than distance runners, lol). Just more fit.
This is really a bummer because I was just discussing it with a friend and we realized that preceding this new flare I had gotten really obsessed with running and had actually been working out way too much (like 3+ hours a day). But it was a combo of running, walking, biking and strength training. but stress is stress, right?
I also had some other stressors I won't go into.....my stress load was huge. I have never thought of exercise as stress per say, but more of a stress reliever. Even though I saw an episode awhile back on 60 minutes that followed a group of folks for decades and they concluded that 45 minutes of exercise 6 times a week was optimal.
Hmmm. More to think about.
Edited for clarity ;-)
Yeah I've seen a bunch of others get physically worn down by intense running. These are people who don't even have UC or another chronic condition. It was really a shame that so many 20-something runners became so worn down. Can't even count how many runners around this age I've seen physically deteriorate--race times drop from pretty respectable to incredibly pedestrian, shot knees, lethargy, general decrepitness... though I suppose I'm biased haha. I have a bit of an adversarial/hate-hate relationship with running nowadays.
And you're definitely right--triathletes just look a lot healthier than most runners. I weigh more with my active UC than I did when I was running... insane to think about
really. Though anyone who competes in Ironman triathlons is probably a bit on the intense/fanatical side haha
Just based on my experience, I'd probably agree that 45 mins a day, six days a week would work for most folks (assuming one didn't go all out everyday for those 45 minutes).
