I was diagnosed with UC in 2006. about a month ago I became violently ill with what I thought was just the worst flare of my life. I finally ended up in the emergency room because I was severely dehydrated, and the pain was horrible. I was pumped full of fluids, drugs, and steroids. On day three in the hospital, my c diff test came back positive. Prior to that it had been inconclusive. I was put on flagyl and sent home. The gastro said they wanted me to deal with the c diff first before addressing the UC. Things seemed to be getting slightly better for a few days, but it didn't last long.

about a week later I ended up back in the ER with dehydration, and my heart rate was steadily between 120 and 140 bpm. They gave me fluids and just told me to keep taking flagyl.

Fast forward to day... four weeks since initial ER visit. I've lost about 35 pounds. I'm in pain all the time. I can't eat anything. I am nauseous. I have a pounding headache. There is a lot of blood every time I use the restroom which is at least twenty times a day. I've also started vomiting once every few days. I'm only 32, but I've genuinely felt as if I'm dying. I don't know what to do. I will call my gastro on Monday, but at what point is it time to really worry?

I had never even heard of c diff until I went into the hospital that day. I can't find many resources online besides warning pamphlets and general information mainly geared toward older folks. I can barely function. I don't leave my bedroom much less my house. I feel extremely isolated and frustrated and anxious and miserable. I'm really struggling.

Hi, I am really quite new here, but I have been using that search box up on the top right quite a bit. I just typed in "c diff" and there were lots of threads from different areas here. If no-one answers who has a lot of experience.....maybe you could glean a good answer from one or more of these threads? several from the UC area and the Crohn's area...

My feeling is to call now to see what a doctor at the hospital says? that sounds awful. But like you, I tend to wait things out a really long time. Good luck, I am sending you tons of healing vibes.

I am not an expert on c diff.

But, as miserable as you feel, we are all here with you. Many people have survived worse here. I do not say that to minimize what you are going through. What you are experiencing is truly awful.

What I am trying to say is hold on.

Do not give up hope.

We will help carry you through this.

One of the moderators will be along shortly with good answers.

I am very sorry about what you are going through. Tough times, got c diff a few times and it is really hard physically and mentally. Hang on it will get better.

The ER should have put you back on your feet. Which means hydration by fluids of course but also making shure the antibiotics works by lowering bm movement and crp (inflammation indicator). It seems that flagyl doesn't do the job. Since c diff is an antibiotic resistant bug, I think you should be switched to Vancomycin, Dificid or Fecal transplant (FMT). And from the testimony of others, flagyl gives awful side effects and is not the most effective. I don't know why they sent you home like this the second time and why they are not making shure the antibiotic works... You should have got better few days after the antibiotic. For Vanco, it takes 48h,. Maybe you could go to another hospital? Get a second opinion?
Keep reading post about c diff on healing well and online, there is so much to know about this bacteria and people with IBD are so vulnerable to it unfortunately.

Hi,
For some cases flagyl won't work. Inform your GI asap that your situation is not improving and ask for vancomycin.

FYI- The drill for c.diff is flagyl first line of treatment, if did not work then comes Vancomycin ( 2-3 rounds). Usually C.diff clears out after 1 round of Vanco.But there are many cases that still c.diff positive then the GI recommends fecal transplant- which is the most successful therapy.
Also if you can avoid sweets, dairy and processed oily foods that will helps recovery. With antibiotics probiotic supply is highly recommended.

Google power of poop website to have an idea of c.diff/ UC success stories with Fecal transplant.

I am on my 2nd round of having C-diff. The first round I ended up in the hospital, with the most severe abdominal pain ever. That was over 1 year ago.

I just posted regarding c-diff as well.
I am finshing up on my oral Vanco today, but I am not real confident that the c-diff is gone.

I also doubt that I am picking up the c-diff in the community, but it's possible. I tend to belive that I have recurrent now as it may have colonized? Don't know the answer to that one yet.

Hey I am no doctor, but you sound very very sick to me and I am amazed that you are at home left struggling in such a state. I think the time to worry would be now and I would be heading back to the ER if I was you..let us know how you get on as I am worried about you.
