How long does it take humira to work?

Hi,
I started Humira the last week of November. After my loading dose I felt amazing but symptoms slowly started coming back by the end of the 2 weeks before my next injection. I’m definitely better than I was when I started this medicine but nowhere near remission. I have major urgency issues, blood, my colon aches, some days I go (actually sprint) to the bathroom 10 times a day. Then again some days aren’t that bad. Just curious for those of you who have had success with humira did it happen right away or was it gradual healing over months? This urgency is just killing me. I would love to go one day without worrying where the stupid bathroom is! I’m also on Canasa and Lialda.

It sounds like maybe you need a higher dose or a more frequent dose. I've heard of people doing weekly pens, or two pens at a time. You may also be able to supplement with other medications that will help keep things calm in addition to humira. Do you take 6mp/imuran? Perhaps higher dose rectal medications are worth considering? You really need to go into your GI to get options, but it sounds like you may need a dose adjustment.

I haven’t ever tried 6MP or Imuran. I’ve been on Asacol, Colozol, Rowasa, Uceris and Prednisone. All of which eventually stoped working. I was diagnosed at 13 but didn’t really start having issues until I was mid 20’s. I’ve had long remissions thankfully but I’ve been in this flare for over 2 years and just can’t get it under control. It all started because of antibiotics I took after a surgery. I hate to take any more humira than I have to. I think I’ll talk to the doctor about some other meds to replace the lialda and canasa. Thank you!!

Humira didn’t work for me but for the people it did work for, it was gradual and usually those people get a long long remission from it, I would keep trying still! It’s a very convenient medication! Way better than pills I thought

Your doc can do a blood test to check your humira levels. Mine were low and they gave me second loading dose but unfortunately that didn't work for me. Some others do really well on weekly doses. I would get levels checked first.

Some take humira weekly or every other week. Ask for a dose increase.

Are you only on humira at this time? Combination-therapy works the best for UC, meaning you are on multiple medications at once (humira plus immunomodulators like 6mp/imuran). Introducing anti-inflammatory mesalamine medication might also help (asacol, lialda and rowasa). It's additive, combined affect of multiple meds produces a better cumulative effect.
