Got a bad cold and want to try this. It got good reviews. Has anyone tried it and does it affect your UC?

If not, give me your best UC safe cold remedy.

Never heard of it. I tend to take things like fresh lemon with honey whisky and hot water for a cold.

I hope you feel better soon! Colds are horrible and they make you feel miserable.

I tried it...no effect on my cold or UC. Shouldn't affect you adversely unless you take tons....you miht get looser stool, but that's not UC.

What are your symptoms?

Thanks guys, appreciate the input!

Q-my symptoms have just started with a very bad sore throat. However my son has this cold so I know it is going to turn into a very nasty cough. I am trying a new product called Vicks first defense. I hope it works!

I do too....keep us updated.
You should try Mucinex. If the vicks has antihistamine in it, don't use if you have congestion. A decongestant would be better.

As well....use a neti pot/sinus rinse system twice a day.

Thanks Q---I'll let you know. I am always on a quest to deal with germs (having a little guy around, plenty of germs) The Vicks is actually an antimicrobal gel that coats your nose and supposedly makes it an undesirable ph for germs. At least that is the claim--but we will see. No antihistamine in it. I had to buy it on Amazon as they don't sell it in the USA. Looks like I need to go to the UK for this and mesalamine foam.sigh.

Sambucol was next on my list to try after Vicks but now I am not holding out too much hope for it. However if no bad effects than might be worth giving it a go next time around.

Ohhhhhhhhhhh, didn't know that, lol. What are the ingredients in the Vicks?

Won't hurt to try the other anyway.

Thanks Q! I'll have to find the insert for the ingredients when I get home. If you were interested in trying it you can look it up on Amazon it's called Vicks First Defence. The concept is cool but let's see if it actually works. This is my attempt for this cold, next cold Elderberry. Hey, gotta try as long as it won't hurt the UC. As you say " The butt rules" lol.

The first year I flared and then got through it, I started to re-flare again. A friend had made elderberry syrup from fresh elderberries and I thought what the heck, I've got nothing to lose. It ended up stopping the flare completely. Any time I ran out of elder, the flare would start up again. I was able to avoid flaring for a full 6 months by using just elderberry once or twice a day.

It's high in quercetin and anthocyanins which can be potent anti-inflammatories and antioxidants. I later found out that I'm a poor phase II detoxer and the elder was probably helping me with that somehow. I've since switched to stronger medicines for that.

Wow Connor, that is pretty cool. If it could knock out a cold and help with UC-- it is a double winner!!

I have used Sambucol several times and I have found it really good. My GP told me to use it after a flu reaction after having the flu injection. I have used it ever since whenever I feel a cold etc coming on. There is not much else we can take which is forbidden for UC.

It is mainly a high dose of vitamin C and high in antioxidants, which are beneficial. I give it to my kids as well. There is a liquid type as well as capsules.

I highly recommend it.

I'm going to buy some and keep it in my house. My Vicks first defense, didn't really work out too well, but I was hoping. After hearing yours and others feedback, I feel confident enough to try it knowing it won't affect my UC negatively. Thanks again!
