Hi all,
I've been in remission for ulcerative colitis for the past few months and have recently had an abscess.
I'm just back after visiting urgent care, where a physician did an incision and drainage and then prescribed me doxycycline 100mg to be taken twice a day for 10 days.
Should I take the antibiotics?
I'm really hesitant to start the course of antibiotics because the physician mentioned that it would cause diarrhoea and it might even lead to a trigger of a flare for my ulcerative colitis.
I'm currently on probiotics.

You need to take an antibiotic or else you could get an infection that could lead to sepsis. Just make sure to take all your probiaotica and maybe even up them a little.

At the height of one of my flares I developed a painful perianal abscess. After an incision and drainage the doc prescribed Flagyl which not only fixed my abscess but also put me into remission from my flare.
I understand your concern about
antibiotics, they are weapons of mass destruction that kill both good and bad bacteria. Losing the good gut bacteria can eventually allow your gut to be overwhelmed by bad bacteria, including C Diff.
So some doctors recommend taking probiotics (good bacteria) and/or yogurt along with the antibiotics to replenish your gut's good guys. All probiotics are good. Saccharomyces boulardii is a probiotic yeast and because it is a yeast and not bacteria, it is immune from antibiotics.

Alright thanks guys! I'll take the antibiotics in that case and up my dosage of probiotics!
Fingers crossed I don't get diarrhea and this doesn't become a trigger for a future flare >

Ive been fine with most all antibiotics I've been given over the years. I've never had any GI effects from any , other than erthromycin but I'm allergic to it.
They can cause GI symptoms for sure but it's not a given
Obviously I can't tell you whether to take them or not but I'm just putting my experience out there of no negative effects over 8 years of UC

Take antibiotics and probiotics. Sometimes antibiotics are just necessary for us, like for you right now.
