Persistent abdominal pain despite treatment

Hello all! I am new to the forum.

Hy 35 yo husband (asian) was ddx ulcerative colitis by colonoscopy in Sept 2017. Transver colon, sigmoid colon and rectum showed varying degress of acute and chronic inflammation. No dysplasia.
Symptoms are diffuse abd pain, urgency, and bleeding. 15 lb wt loss in 1 year.
He took Lialda/mesalamine for 2 month with some improvement but all symptoms recurred on 3rd month with Lialda. Added uceris for 1 month without change. He is now on oral prednisone taper started at 40mg daily.

Urgency and bleeding significantly improved. But his abodminal pain range 3-7/10 in intensity NEVER cease for more than 2 days, which is very debilitating both mentally and physically for him.
He tried VSL#3 but stopped due to bloating. We are seeing GI.

Does abdominal pain from ulceratvie colitis linger this long while other symptoms improve?
Is there anything else we can do?

I've been hit with abdominal pains so severe they dropped me to my knees in tears even when other symptoms were minimal or non existent. Hopefully your GI can help you find relief, I know how bad those pains get

Abdominal pains can be from the UC flareup itself (I've had sharp knife-stabbing pains and milder aches), trapped gas/stool, pancreatitis, blood clots, kidneystones, and gallstones.

Hey Matsukichu,

Im sorry your husband is dealing with this, I am kind of wondering the same thing. All of my symptoms have basically gotten much better since I started 40mg prednisone taper, yet I have persistent abdominal pain. I would mention it to his GI and see what he says. I'm curious what it could be so maybe let us know! I personally have pain that can last hours at a time, its dull and never gets too intense, but god is it annoying and frustrating. We both have been diagnosed fairly recently, so perhaps we both need more time for our colons to heal. Also, I would recommend recatal meds, although I still have pain, I did see a lot of improvement with them .

My abdominal pain lingered for may years during which I was deemed to be in remission. I took the view that the pain was a sign of low level inflammation/problems and not something I should still be experiencing. My GI was willing to move me on to stronger medication (I am on azathioprine and balsalazide), but I was reluctant to do so for what is mild UC. In my case, I went on SCD and the pain went away in days.

I am still experiencing a ton of abdominal pain, which is consistent throughout the whole day, although I am not having any other issues (Frequency/Urgency). I have done no diet modification, so I will definitely take your suggestion and try the SCD before I suggest any stronger medications to my GI. Maybe ill wait until I finish my prod taper, that way I will be able to pinpoint if my diet is benefiting the pain.

The only thing that seems to really tackle my abdominal pain is Bentyl. It's really a life saver. 20mg every 4 hours....Antispasmodic...

I have pain too and I am on Humira - no blood but lots of abdominal pain etc. I can barely eat and have a doc appt to discuss this. I took some Bentyl today but it makes me so sleepy. It says to take every 6 hours so you can take it every 4?
