Colazal making things worse??

Just wondering if anyone else taking Colazal has found their symptoms to be worse? I take 3 capsules 3x a day but am now thinking it might be the cause of my extreme urgency. Tks.

Try skipping your colazal for 48 hours and see if your symptoms improve. Mesalamine allergies/intolerances are rare (less than 5% of uc patients), but can happen at any time. If you do have an allergy/intolerance than your symptoms will be dramatically better. Without an allergy/intolerance there'd be no change in symptoms when you stop.

No, I am off of the rectals because of extreme hemorrhoids. Have a new Rx that I will start this evening for the hemorrhoids. I did not take the Colazal today as recommended by Ipoop.

Colazal did worse for me than the generic Balsalazide. Yet other people it's the opposite. It's supposed to be the same RX but our guts tell us what they like. Have you tried the generic yet?

No, haven’t tried the generic but I have only had one BM today, made it to the loo with a few seconds to spare. BM was formed but mushy, before while on the Colazal it was pure mush. Also have noticed that my heart is not beating as rapidly. A few more days will tell me if it was indeed the Colazal.

Could be mesalamine in general......but since you're off the colazal, I suggest you go back on the enemas and see how you react.

All of us react differently, but I had a really hard time with mesalamine. I tried Rowasa (enemas) for a couple of weeks, with a worsening of symptoms, and then we tried balsalazide, and that made things much worse very quickly (we were monitoring calprotectin at the time so it was easy to document the change). Ultimately I was intolerant to mesalamine and went straight to Remicade from there.
