Budesonide effectiveness

Was just prescribed and started taking budesonide 9 mg a day for 2 weeks and then 3 mg a day for 1 week, on top of doing mesalamine enemas to attempt to address a flare-up in my lower end. Been dealing with rectal inflammation and bleeding and tenesmus.

If anything, I would say the first two days after taking the budesonide my symptoms are worse.

Has anyone had any luck with this medication? Does it generally take awhile for it to work? Read some very old posts on this and it sounded as though it didn't provide immediate relief.

My suggestion is for you to try Uceris (budesonide) foam, applied rectally. It helped me get out of a flare when I developed an intolerance to Canasa. My Dr. originally prescribed Uceris oral and it did cause digestive discomfort but it was showing improvement, confirmed by flex sig, although not getting me into remission. Within 7 days of taking Uceris foam, 2x/day, my pain, bleeding, and mucus were greatly reduced. Within 1 month of treatment I had no symptoms. I continued treating with it and was in remission, confirmed by my next flex sig.

No doctor-dictators allowed. It's not what you "want" but rather what you "need to be well." Being your own best advocate for what you need to be well is essential skill to have with UC. As we often find we know as much as our doctors with a chronic, life-long illness. The best doctors are partners, our sounding-boards that we toss ideas back and forth with to come to a common agreement on what's the best path moving forward that you/I are comfortable with. Do I disagree with my doctor at time, yes! Not with just a "no," but rather with a reason why and an alternative suggestion. We discuss and decide. And a simple: "Let me try it for 3-4 weeks, we'll reassess based on results and then keep it or try something else" often works well. UC is just so full of trial-and-error and individual solutions that there is no single, right answer. Rather a full pallet of options worthy of trying.

Why would anyone, doctor or patient, prescribe or use this medication?! I’m pretty upset now because taking budesonide set me back another week, all symptoms got worse, worse symptoms appeared, and I just decided to stop it and I am seeing immediate relief, not changing or adding anything else to my treatment. Bleeding stopped completely.
I’m sure there are others Studies out there but this study below is extremely disappointing to this medication. And I don’t think we should be taking the chance. Not to mention budesonide is for micro colitis, so very specific applications. Meanwhile we have doctors prescribing this poison like candy to every colitis patient

It helped me a lot for about 2 years. It's a lot safer for pred. I took it long term for maintenance while trying all the biologics. I think it's a great med for milder flares.

It worked for me immediately in November and I took an eight week course (9mg a day). Completely stopped the bleeding and diarrhea and gave me back my energy and life. Unfortunately I relapsed one week after stopping. GI Dr started me on another course after a few weeks but it did nothing this time. Now on 50mg prednisone tapering down…am at 35 mg now and had a terrible night last night. Next Entyvio infusion on Monday but honestly I started in July and it hasn’t helped. I think Remicade might be next. So over this.

I read somewhere there’s no additional benefit from 60 to 40 mg pred so they now suggest just going with 40 as it also lessens the blow to the entire body.
