Now UC It, Now You Don't said...
I recently had a total colectomy and ileostomy due to Ulcerative Colitis. I posted prior to my surgery and owe everyone an update, but this will come a bit later as I’m still in early recovery in the hospital. As I lay here recovering though, I have questions for people who’ve had an ileostomy and J Pouch. I want to know the pros and cons of each.
If you’ve had the J Pouch procedure, would you recommend it? Was it worth doing the second procedure and reversing the ileostomy?
What is it like emptying the J pouch? How often do you do this? Stool consistency? Urgency?
How quickly did you get used to using the J pouch? I’ve been warned it can take a year to fully adapt to it.
What is the recovery like from the surgery?
Any return of symptoms?
Thanks in advance.
Yes, I recommend it if you’re a candidate. Yes, to me it was TOTALLY worth reversing the ileostomy.
For me emptying the j pouch is a quick and easy as urinating. Just sit and go.
I go 4-6x a day.
Stool is soft to liquidy...depends on what I eat that day.
Zero urgency.
I was fortunate and adjusted very quickly. 1 month after takedown (reversal) I was back to life as usual.
Recovery from this procedure is very tough. I will not sugarcoat it!
I have been free of UC since the day my colon was removed. It’s gone.
