Dosing Experience between Mesalamine (Canasa) enema vs suppository

Hey guys,

just wanted to know your experience. Went from taking 4 grams / 60 ml capsule to a 1 g suppository. I initially thought it was a lowered dose, which wouldn't make any sense but I've been looking it up and I found
"Ulcerative proctitis, active:
[Mesalamine] Retention enema (suspension): 4 g at bedtime, retained overnight, approximately 8 hours
[Rectal suppository]: 1,000 mg (1 suppository) rectally (retain for at least 1 to 3 hours) at bedtime for 3 to 6 weeks."

So it seems like they're just absorbed at different amounts. Do any of you have any experience with the dosing, if you've taken both suppositories or enemas? Seems like its the same effective dose, but part of me is still worried my dose got lowered....

The use of both at night is to give an additional dosage in the rectum if that area is being extra stubborn.

If that's not the case...use the enemas at night and the suppositories during the day after the majority of bms.

I didn't get both, that's why I was trying to figure out if they're equivalent effective dosages....they gave me these instead of the enema...Is that bad?

Oopsie, misunderstood.
Not bad....just not as effective unless your inflammation is limited to low in the rectum.
When are you seeing the doc again?

Who gave you the suppositories instead of the enema? The pharmacists?
They are not equivalent.
If the dr prescribed mesalamine enema for you, get the enema.
If the dr prescribed both, then get them both.

The 4 grams / 60 ml retention-enema covers the whole left-side of the large intestine, from rectum to sigmoid colon to descending colon, up until the splenic flexure. So it is 4 times the medication spread over a larger area.

The 1 gram suppository treats only the rectum (about 6-inches of area). Covers a lot less total area.
