I've been on Budesonide for almost 9 weeks. I've read that the 'normal' first course of this steroid should be 6 to 8 weeks. No real obvious side effects.
My GI (actually her RN) says I should continue daily, until I see her in two weeks. That will put me at almost 11 weeks. Anyone have experience with taking Budesonide for this long, and is there anything I need to watch out for?
Your advise is most appreciated.

A most interesting study on the efficacy of Budesonide, which is not very promising.

My GI did not want to give a 2nd 8-week course, but I understand some GI will.
The only side effects ate the usual steroid side effects, but they should be less than pred. Many people spend more than 11 weeks on pred - although only if they must.

In the distant past I was on pred for three months, but the last month was a gradual tapering from 60 mg to 5 mg. It cooled me down.
Hunting around, more than eight weeks on Budesonide is much more common with Crohn's than with UC. Looks like eleven weeks should be OK, but the cavalier attitude of my GI's office is disappointing. I'll see what she has to say on May 1st.
After that I may take a trek up to Mayo in Jacksonville for an 'expert' second opinion, from Dr. Frank Farraye. He has an impressive background and CV, plus he has studied the interaction of C. Dif with IBD.
Usual Adult Dose of Budesonide for Ulcerative Colitis ~ per Mayo Clinic:
Extended-release tablets:
Initial dose: 9 mg orally once a day in the morning
Duration of therapy: Up to 8 weeks

My GI suggested continued Uceris for 6 months (I'm on month #3, of remission).

Budesonide is less worrisome than prednisone, often 8 weeks on Budesonide is common. Have I heard of some going longer, sure. Generally you want to stay on Budesonide as short as you can, if there's a legit reason for going longer then that's fine. I'd just ask the doc if there's a reason why we need to go this long, and make sure its justified.

Thanks Tristan. what dosage of Uceris are you taking??
I will check with my GI next week, as you suggest iPoop, and will probably get a Mayo second opinion.
At this point, after 9 weeks of Uceris, my symptoms are much improved. 4 BM per day plus several false starts, much less urgency, no gas and almost no surprises. Not remission yet, but better.
....and so it goes.

Do you mean months 7-9 subsequent to the 6 months of Uceris? Remission does not begin while still on steroids.

All in, I'll be 8 months of 9mg Uceris.
All the usual markers (FC, CRP, ESR) are normal, colonoscopy + pathology = "unremarkable".
When I asked GI about
his approach to budesonide, he attributed to an increased chance of achieving a deeper remission with increased rate/quality of mucosal healing...

My doc doesn't want me to take more than 9 weeks worth. Just took last dose of uceris today.
