Just Finished my first Pred. taper.
At about 5mg the roof of my mouth started feeling sore.
By the time I finished the entire roof of my mouth was very red and "on fire".
It spread to my lips as well.
I can hardly talk and eating is very painful.
It doesn't look or feel like regular canker sores.
Is this a withdrawal symptom or the UC spread to my mouth?
Anyone experience this or have any thoughts on how to take care of it?

You might have a fungal infection. Maybe see your PCP?

Possible thrush or candida overgrowth. Can you see any white patches on the insides of your mouth, if you stand in front of the mirror and shine a light in there?

Pred reduces immunity. It's probably thrush as the others have said. Go to the doctor, even urgent care can take a look and provide medication to treat it. Thrush usually has white spots and redness.

You should also pursue regular dental hygiene office visits at least every 6 months because oral steroids can damage the dental ligaments/gums, & jawbone over time. It's best to catch any of those dental problems early on. / Old Hat (38 yrs with left-sided UC; presently in remission taking brandname Colazal)

@ipoop - Yup theres some white stuff in and around the red.
Any treatment ideas?
Should I go to my GI for this or regular GP? (It will take weeks to get an appointment with the GI...)

I had thrush while on pred (had a milky white tongue, and white patches on my cheek insides), and visited my GP about it. GP said I can give you an oral antifungal but until the pred course is over, it is pointless (it'll just come back repeatedly). GP said it would go away on its own once I was off of pred, and it did as he said. Maybe took a week or two post-pred for that to go away.

You can always call/email your GP and ask what he/she does for thrush (just coming off of pred). Thrush is pretty common, and some of our friends with asthma-inhalators that are steroid based often encounter this issue as well.

Saw my GP today. Said he really doesnt think its Fungal. The white that I was seeing isnt really white.
I had bad lighting when examining it myself...
He referred me to a dermatologist.
Im seeing her tomorrow.

My tongue is completely fine. Its mostly red raw skin in large patches on the roof of my mouth as well
as all along the inside of my lips. And it feels like its on fire 24/7 sad
Its been a full week since stopping Pred.

Isn't this what my gut looks like?
Couldn't my inflammation spread to my mouth? I think I remember reading that it could happen with
IBD specifically CD (One GI I saw thinks I have CD as well/rather than UC. I'll have a scope soon to
see if its true).

Well we know the gut bacterium is messed up within our large intestine, and our mouth is just the other end of the same tube. An educated guess would say that the gut bacterium are messed up from lips to sphincter. Certainly steroids cause an imbalance in bacterium/fungal/viral concentrations, which is a temporary thing.

However, those imbalances are hardly static/permanent, rather change are dynamic as we heal and change based on environment. You heal and eat better and more diverse diet which encourages more diversity in our bacterium. So over time we return to a more normal state, mirrors flare (abnormal bacterium and health) and remission states (mostly normal bacteria and health). Certainly the baddies are opportunists who quickly gain ground and reproduce when there is a big die off of healthy stuff. Establishing goodies in abundance takes a lot more time and persistence, and greater diversity of goodies takes time.
