Hi, I am in the middle of an UC flare. I usually take 2g of Pentasa daily and have doubled this to 4g over the past month to no avail. My consultant today has prescribed Budesonide (the pharmacy has given me Budenofalk) and I am also going back on Mercaptopurine which I came off a couple of years ago as it was having a negative effect on my immune system. Does anyone have any experience of Budesonide/Budenofalk - it’s side effects and success rate. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum but sorry to hear you're flaring. Budesonide is a 90% topical and 10% systematic medication. The systematic part is what gives you side effects. Some say no side effects on Budesonide, others say mild steroid side effects (like mild bloating, mild irritability, mildly increased appetite, etc.)

Waaaaay better than 100% systematic prednisone!

Thanks so much for your reply. The pharmacy has given me Budenofalk - on reading the enclosed leaflet is says it’s for Crohn’s and Collagenous Colitis. Are all the brands essentially the same or are there others that are better for Ulcerative Colitis? Thanks

There's a number of brands of delayed-release, oral Budesonide pills (Budenofalk/Uceris/Clipper/Entocort EC, etc). They are all very similar in effect. They might vary a bit in initial release point, if it says Crohn's then it likely starts releasing somewhere within the small intestine (likely near the end of the small intestine where it joins the large intestine). I am sure that as a UC patient, you will receive benefit from taking these meds, as they do treat the large intestine as well.

I've been on one Budesonide 9mg tablet a day, for the past 4 months, and I'm doing very well on it. Side effects are minimal, at best. Good luck!
