Stomach cramps and burning after switching pills

So I switched from the Pentasa tablets to Salofalk and now I've been experiencing some stomach cramps as well as burning sensations in my stomach. It's not very painful but should I be worried about this?

Both pentasa and salofalk have delayed-release coatings, meaning the medication should not be released until it reaches your large intestine. Pretty strange on the stomach, does this happen immediately after taking your pills, later on, etc?

Why the switch? Are you on rectal meds as well?

I meant the general gut area rather than just the stomach. What I wanted to know was could a switch from Pentasa to Salofalk cause these problems or could it be another reason?

Right now I am because it seems my colitis is acting up. Normally I only use the suppositories when I feel discomfort in the rectum but right now it seems every day I feel something in there even though I've been using the suppositories every day so I'm afraid to stop using them for fear that I'm going to start bleeding. It's strange because normally I will feel completely fine after using the suppositories for a day or two but it seems now it's lingering.

It's always possible a change in meds could have an unexpected adverse effect. Generally you are talking lower odds, an allergy to the coating on the medication, or an inactive ingredient. You can always switch back and see if the problems disappear. There's a variety of different brands and formulations, anecdotally, some report better results with one over another.

What exactly are your symptoms...meaning stool consistency, frequency, etc.

What is the dosage of the salofalk oral? And dosage of the suppositories?

Ok, one more question, does a change in pills have any impact on proctitis if I'm still using the same suppositories? I think my main concern is the possibility that I might start bleeding out of the rectum again.

Inflammation has an impact on your symptoms of proctitis. Oral mesalamines really don't treat it.
I've asked what your symptoms are exactly.... if you share, it will give better insight as to what's happening and we can explain it so that you can understand.

Popping the pills should help your proctitis symptoms, conversely if the pills aren't working (very unlikely) then your pcrotitis symptoms could get worse. You're likely not going to bleed profusely from the bumm unless you flare up.

Reading a lot of anxiety from your posts, understand as a lot of us have anxiety. I would try and not worry, low odds. In fact, the stress/anxiety is more likely to upset your symptoms then anything else is.

Number of bowel movements is normal, although they come out in clumps rather than one log. I've been experiencing abdominal discomfort, a burning feeling in my gut and constant belching. These symptoms make me think that something is not right.

You could have upper gastro issue such as h. Pylori or gastritis or reflux.

When I have those symptoms continually, I'm flaring and increase rectal meds.
Please consider to request retention enemas of higher dosage.

As well...You could try fibre supplements and probiotics.

I think I'm going to increase my suppositories to 2 a day and see if that helps.

You could also take an acid reducer such as Zantac and see if that helps. Take Zantac half hour before breakfast and same with supper . I used 150mg.

Doubling the supps can help. Please...what is the dosage of them...1000mg or 500mg?

That's fine. Most mesalamine a day I've been prescribed a day is 12.8-grams. That's orally 4.8-grams a day, and then two 4.0-gram enemas (4.0 times two).

Two, 1-gram mesalamine suppositories a day is common.

Absolutely fine! The enemas go up to 4g, and some use them 2x daily for a while. You have LOTS of options in that category. Steroid supps and enemas as well.

Make sure you have an RX to match your dosage change, or the pharmacy wont refill.
