How does everyone do with coffee? I usually start drinking it again when I feel my symptoms improving… and then ultimately I get set back, and it makes me wonder if coffee is partially to blame. I’ve read that it might be high in oxalates (not by all accounts though). Of course, mold maybe, depending on the quality. And histamine? Acid? Feels like there’s something going on with it that I can tolerate at first when my gut is feeling more balanced, and then it seems to tip the scale to a less balanced state.
So… when this happens I actually revert back to taking caffeine pills, which are pretty great, but I just love a cup of coffee sometimes. I think I need to just cut coffee out completely until I’m symptom free (which hasn’t happened yet).

I can not drink coffee at all when I am flaring. It doesn't even appeal to me! During my first flare before I was diagnosed and didn't know what was wrong with me, I was fatigued all the time so to get through my day at work I would want to drink coffee... but my body clearly didn't want it! It was like I was trying to force down liver or something I really hate. It was so strange. During remission I have no issues whatsoever with it and love it as much as I ever have. So my advice would be to put it on hold until you are completely better if you feel it is creating an issue for you.

No problem with coffee...but I don't like all coffee. The smell of the really dark roast burnt taste ones makes me feel nauseated.

Caffeine is a stimulant to body processes; therefore, when a UCer is flaring, doctors usually advise to cut out coffee & chocolate consumption. Even tea labelled "caffeine-free" can cause problems during flares, per some articles I've read in recent yrs. So caffeine pills are not a good idea, either ... sorry! I think this issue came up on the forum a couple months back, when the person who inquired about
coffee drinking posted that he depends on it to pep him up for a long drive to work in AM; then another UCer replied with a suggestion to brew some warm homemade lemonade instead. / Old Hat (40+ yrs with left-sided UC; in remission taking Colazal)

I hear ya… however I think there’s something in the actual coffee bean that isn’t in a caffeine tablet, since the caffeine tablets do not irritate me. Coffee on the other hand, I can feel it changing my intestinal environment after drinking it for a few days to a week or so… Doesn’t happen with the supplement. My hunch is that it’s not the immune stimulating or dopamine releasing properties, but more so maybe the acidity or something else… mold, oxalates—I’m not sure.

I cannot do coffee when I am flaring, and I miss it so much! It and alcohol are very bad for me at that time.

If I am flaring, no. If not, I have no issues
