I was hoping to hear people’s thoughts/experiences about
using pain medication during a tough flare. Although in reasonable remission at the moment, I struggle with occasional thoughts and angst about
how I suffered during my last severe flare. I took 2000 mg Tylenol during this flare and the Tylenol barely touched the pain. I worry I might have to experience that type of pain again? Has anyone been prescribed painkillers for a tough flare?

Take em if you need them AND if you can get a doctor to care enough to prescribe them (that's the tough part). Tramadol is the safest and I've been prescribed that by one GI. He also gave me a small script
for hydrocodone one time when I begged (Tramadol isn't very strong). Every other GI I have ever had never gave me anything, unless I was hospitalized.

I'm guessing it's for pain? Just a wild guess.

You are lucky you found some when needed. My GI’s have been reluctant to start me on pain meds believing people can get hooked unless the UC is put into remission. But there were certainly some months when the pain was killing me and I could have used some pain meds.

Yeah, I was lucky. Unfortunately, that GI and his staff were really bad in many other ways, so I had to get a new doctor. I still have some Tramadol saved up, but I'm guessing my new GI will never give me more if I need it again. :/ Makes me kind of wish I had stayed with the old guy solely for the pain meds. I never took them for months, more like a week or two while waiting for steroids to kick in. I never got addicted. In fact, I have been hoarding one script
in my medicine cabinet for over a year now... Lol.

I've heard people talk about
getting prescribed anti spasmatics to help with the cramping. Maybe someone can say what that med is (I've never had it)

The anitspasmodic I use is dicyclomine (Bentyl, Bentylol...). There are others, but Ive never tried them.
Any opioid will help slow down transit, so can be helpful if one has no infection or invaders etc. Only problem is it can cause constipation.

Dicyclomine also called Bentyl. Might help a little but a bad flare is a bad flare.

Yeah, antispasmodics do absolutely nothing for me. I've tried them all -- Bentyl, Levsin and Donnatal. Like taking a sugar pill.

After years of trying everything....some worked a little, some didn't. Remicade was best and am now on Entyvio and in remission. The one thing that helped me finally get back into remission wasn't pain medication but a mild anti-anxiety drug. Three days after starting, I went into remission, and have been, for almost a year now. Problem is...my doc doesn't like prescribing anything the may be habit forming; so I only take it periodically. I now have osteo. arthritis as well as U.C. and IBS. So...I'm having to live with the pain of the arthritis, but am not afraid to leave home and the security of a nearby 'thunder mug'. LOL Best of luck to you.

I’ve been on Xanax and it helps. (Be careful, getting off of this stuff is both extremely difficult and dangerous). The only time I’ve hurt really badly with cramps/spasms is when I was constipated. A little bit of Linzess got me going again. Pain dissipated then.
My stomach always hurts some during any given day.

Wow, all you people who get no pain are very lucky. I don't see how Xanax could help UC pain from ulcers and inflammation. It sure never did a thing for my UC.
