Causation of human ulcerative colitis: A lead from an animal model that mirrors human disease

From the study it seems that pantothenic deficiency is not the cause of UC, but only in a similar "expermimental colitis" seen in the pigs.

Pigs: Pantothenic acid deficiency -> lowered co-enzyme A -> failed butyrate oxidation

Humans:Bacterial dysbiosis -> lowered co-enzyme A -> failed butyrate oxidation

This is interesting because it puts a new slant on the role of butyrate in causation of UC. The main theory that I have seen before is that poor diet (not enough fibre) leads to insufficient butyrate production, which forces epithelial cells to use glucose instead of butyrate, which leads to UC.

This theory says that it's not insufficient amount of butyrate, but actually nitric oxide and sulphide which inhibits the use of butyrate even if it is available. This would explain why butyrate enemas seem to have a mixed success in treating UC.
