How do you treat osteoporosis?

I did 18 months of Forteo injections, this was not long after it came out, it was a long slog too. I didn't have any trouble while on it. Since Forteo has been on the market newer medications are available.

You can do a search on the medications & print out the information & take it with you to the appt. Depending on which medication the dr recommends, ask about the potential side effects. I know it's scary reading about side effects, but it does not mean you will have any. This is a CYA thing.

Make a list of questions so you don't forget something. Good luck with your appt.

Reclast (zoledronic acid) is an infusion that my very smart endocrinologist says only needs to be given every 2 years. No side effects at all in my case and I would opt for Reclast or Prolia rather than not treating. You are wise to avoid oral alendronates like Fosamax which increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding. Take care of any needed dental surgery before you start.

naturalcurl, what do you do if you are in pain and need a tooth extraction after you start the medication? Do you know?

I have a friend who has osteoporosis. She’s had the pills before and then the shots (not sure which ones). She stopped the shots when she had to have a dental implant. After that she went on the estrogen patch as that’s supposed to be a low dose and hopefully help her bone density. I don’t know the results of subsequent bone scans however, to know if the patch is helping.
