Avelox healed my Ulcerative Colitis

I've had Ulcerative Colitis since 1997 off and on and since 2000 I've been symptomatic. I lost so much blood that I was diagnosed with Chronic Anemia. When an allergist prescribed Avelox for a chronic sinus infection my Ulcerative Colitis symptoms started going away within days and were completely gone by the time I finished the 10 day regimen. I've had normal bm's ever since. I started taking the Avalox July 17th and it is now Sept 3rd and I am symptom free. I've even had a colonoscopy and the report came back with mild gastritis and mild proctitis. I feel great. I post this in hopes that it might be helpful to someone out there.  I will continue to avoid a lot of beef, pork, sodas, etc and supplement with the healing foods and probiotics but I'm thankful for the quick cure I got from Avalox. I could swear that's how they spell it but I've seen both, Avalox and Avelox.

You're not cured...you still have findings of obvious inflammation in the rectum and throughout the colon because of the gastritis finding.

What is the cause of the gastritis?

It's great your sinus infection has been dealt with...I would think that bacteria ladened snot being poured into the stomach and into the gastro tract would cause exacerbation of problems...especially if one has UC or any type of autoimmune disease.

What meds are you on for UC?

I take digestive enzymes with each meal and I have a couple forms of probiotics that I take daily.

I need to go to my follow-up after the colonoscopy. Ruwasa used to work really well for me. If the symptoms come back I'll probably take the latest version of that.

Rowasa enemas or the suppositories?

The fact that you have some inflammation and gastritis shouldn't necessarily mean you need to wait for symptoms.

It would be good to have a plan set into motion regarding meds...such as oral and rectal 5ASA meds to help prevent the UC from getting worse/spreading. Sometimes we just don't feel as bad as it can look internally. 5ASA (oral and rectal) is used for treatment and tapered to maintenance.

When's your appointment for the follow-up? When was your colonoscopy?

The colonoscopy was at the end of July. I have bottles and bottles of the oral ASA and I won't take it. As a matter of fact it didn't make any difference anyway so I stopped taking it. I'm interested in any natural healing / nutritional advice you have to get to the root of the problem but I will not take meds for the rest of my life. This will either be healed or it will kill me but I refuse to let the drugs do me in. Thank you for your concern and your service.

Well, I won't be questioning you any longer....you seem to have made one life decision.

We do have is the ability to make decisions. Although not all decisions are in our best interests.

Yeah, a major flare can quickly change any sort of drastic decisions made while healthy...I hope it doesn't happen though!

I understand your feelings, but sometimes meds help get things under control and give natural methods a fighting chance to heal. The oral ASAs are relatively safe to take long-term, particularly when compared to the immunosuppresants and steroids. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing decision.

I do understand that, for some people, the best decision with respect to taking meds on a long-term basis is more of a grey area than a black and white issue as it is for others. While the meds can help keep UC in remission and in check, the flip side to that decision is the unknown effect that taking these "chemicals" will do to our bodies down the road. I struggle with this one myself. At the moment, I am taking my meds for UC....but for an unrelated medical condition, I have opted out of the recommended meds and surgery so far and managing it with the help of a naturopath and herbal supplements. I think it's a very individual decision and one treatment approach will not necessarily suit everyone.

Well said, Sandra.

For me, I believe meds helped me get things under control when I was first diagnosed and was desperately ill. I have remained on a low maintenance dose of azulfadine, but that's the only med I've needed for the past several years, as a sort of insurance policy, while I've developed a combination of natural supplements and diet that work for me to keep me in remission.
