How do you know if you have blood in your stools?

As I've mentioned in another thread, I've been dealing with some watery diarrhea lately anywhere from 2-4 episodes per day. Last Friday I surpassed my old record of 7 BMs in one day with 12 BMs on Friday. I'd say that within a 6 hour period on Friday night I had 8 or 9 of those 12 BMs. I never did see anything red in them but the matter that came out was watery and dark brown colored (with an exceptionally foul odor). How do you know if you're passing blood in your stools? What should I look for?

You look for blood. You'll see it.

When I have blood it is usually fairly obvious....bright red and/or blobs of blood floating in the water. If the stool is remotely formed I can see it on that as well.

You'll see it or a doctor can. Sometimes we can have bleeding and not see it unless a doctor tests for it. I had this happen when I was first diagnosed. I didn't think I was bleeding since I didn't see any but my doc did a stool test and she said that there was still blood in my stool. But for the most part, mine is now very obvious. Not to sound gross but it can look like someone sacrificed a lamb in the toilet.

And I have this every once in awhile but not on a regular basis sometimes with pain in the gut and sometimes with no pain.

Yes, it was obvious for me, I Gotta Go. First, I just saw bright red blood on the toilet paper while wiping, then I started passing BMs that were just blood and mucous. Not fun.

Dansky-Is the list under your post the medication you are on? My mum is on the Pariet and has been having blood in her stools on and off. She's been to a specialist and had a gastro-thing done as well as a colonoscopy. She has had her large intestine and smalls checked as well. She's now going to another specialist and he wants to do the gastro and colonoscopy again. He thinks it the Pariet but her family doctor and the first specialist said it wasn't....

At night our upstairs bathroom isn't well lit, so I keep a flashlight on the counter so I can examine the poo to look for blood. If it's there I can see it.

FecaL occult blood test. Just because you don't see it doesn't mean its not there. I just figure there will always be some there, whether I see it or not.
