burned out sigmoid colitis

Hi everyone,

    i just had a colonscopy and the Drs. findings are "Distal sigmoid had tubular appearance ,appears bland,with decreased vascular pattern,possibly suggestive of a "burn out" distal colon colitis.

Does anyone know the meaning of this. Thanks confused

It sounds to me like the doctor is describing something he thinks has been going on in the sigmoid colon for some time. I have never encountered the words "bland" or "burnt out" in a c-scope report, though. You'll likely have to ask your gastro exactly what that means. Are you newly diagnosed with UC? Or was that a follow-up c-scope? / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 6 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon; should be back in remission again soon)

Did a little homework for you..hope it helps.

Distal sigmoid...lowest part of the sigmoid

Distal colitis...lowest part of the colon which would include the rectum/sigmoid

Tubular appearance....smooth and round or tubular without lots of "structure"

Bland ... without symptoms or asymptomatic

Decreased vascular pattern ... normal vascular pattern isn't visible

Burned out (Burnt out)... distensible (can stretch and expand)  but without haustral markings...meaning without the pouchy appearance ( ) looks more like more like|| ...chronic/advanced/been around for a long while

Cool, Quincy! Based on your homework, then, the doctor seems to be saying that the leftmost sigmoid has become rigid ("tubular"). At the time I was diagnosed in 1980 they used to refer to it as "stovepipe colon", something adequate meds are supposed to prevent. / Old Hat

not rigid quite yet because it's still distensible?...meaning able to stretch. Would it not have said rigid?

Either way...it's chronic but not active at this point.

Interesting process,however...
