The part about it being communicable is disturbing but really nothing new here for me as I run across work almost weekly that sounds like this. The problem is that there must be dozens and dozens of ways to induce colitis. This is just one of many. And really this is meant only for those with UC that respond to anti- TNF-A therapy. Not very many people with UC respond to any sort of anti-tnfa treatment. That is why it was never initially given approval for payment by the insurance companies as a treatment for UC. It's interesting work but next week they'll have something new and different that sounds just as substantial as this. I'll post some instances of some examples of how many different ways there are to induce colitis just to give people an idea of the various ways. This is but one tiny sliver of the pie. But it's always nice to see they keep finding stuff out.

Yes find the disturbing part to also be that it is communicable, they did a study in France and the number of spousal pairs with UC that they found was greater than chance.
From this work it seems that the colon bacteria in T-BEt deleted mice somehow adapt and become pathogenic to wild mice and cause UC. Scary. Old Mike

Very interesting posts, Reef & Old Mike-- many thanks! There is a researcher at Cornell U. Veterinary School studying UC in cats & dogs-- maybe he & L. Glimscher's Harvard group will share info. & replicate mouse studies on the "higher level" mammals to further advance findings. / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC; currently on 5 Colazal daily for July flare in descending colon; should be back in remission again soon)

It is very disturbing that this may be communicable. It also tells me that food may not cause UC, it is extremely important for us to watch what we eat to keep the good bacteria levels up, and the bad ones down.

Keep in mind that mice are faeces-eaters-- before you panic over likelihood of UC communicability btw humans!!!!!!!!!! / Old Hat (nearly 30 yrs with left-sided UC ... [etc.])

as Horus mentioned, it probably IS communicable-- how did WE get it? If UC is genetics + an environmental trigger (likely a pathogen), then that trigger could very feasibly come from other humans (or animals, or airborne, or...).

It still requires a genetic defect, or everyone on the planet would have UC, MS, etc.

Sorry, no one is being cured by Remicade (anti TNF-a), so (unless this is a gross misquote by the reporter) the limits of this mouse model reveal themselves.

Remicade is also partially mouse and partially human derived, as I understood from my GI, which is why having repeat treatment does not usually work for individuals that have their immune system attack this foreign substance. Could that be why it does not work with everyone?

The communicability is a little strange. I could understand the bacteria, but not the disease itself. I guess we'll have to wait to hear more.

Not to hijack the thread but I notice you put that garlic helps your flares. I may have noticed a similar effect on me. I may have to do a little food experiment.
