Hello everyone, Just talked to my mom and she wanted to ask me some questions about UC...I was explaining to her my symptoms and she told me she thinks she has the same thing...Frequency, "D", blood, mucus (Just recently blood)...She has always had somewhat of a sensitive stomach, and was always careful of what she ate when she went out to eat, because of having to go to the bathroom soon thereafter...Anyways, I know they say IBD is/can be hereditary, but I wasn't so sure at first since as far as I knew, no one in my family had any form of IBD...She doesn't know for sure what it is, but it sure sounds like it to me...She goes to the Dr. in the morning...I'll be curious to hear what the dr. says and if they schedule a colonoscopy...If it is IBD, I'll at least know where I get it from...She is 54 yrs old and IF it is UC, I would guess shes probably had it for a long time, but just now getting a good flare...

It's certainly possible. Considering her age and the bleeding, I'd think her doc will definitely want to do a flex sig, if not a whole colonoscopy.

Yes it's hereditary, I have 2 cousins who have Crohn's disease (though I've been dx with UC).  Always made me wonder why I got UC instead of Crohn's though...since the latter runs in my family.

CD and UC are 2 forms of IBD so it's not unusual for some family memebers to have CD and others to have UC...I have CD and my mom has UC.

I just found out recently that yes IBD does run in my family on my mothers side. My great grandmother had either Cd or Uc - it was so long ago that I doubt they even had a name for it back then. My gma is ok colon wise but my mother had Cd(she died due to complications of Cd) and I got Uc. I sincerely hope that the chain is broken with me because I will be devestated if one of my children got it.

Bk, did your mother go in for the scope?

Yes, I also think there is a family connection.  My paternal grandmother died of some colon ailment (not sure because she was 34 when she died, could have been colon cancer but this was all before I was born) and they really weren't aware of these illnesses then.  My father died from complications of Crohn's disease in 1988.  I also hope this cycle is broken and I have not passed this to my children.

I hope neither of my 2 kids get IBD or IBS or any illness for that fact but I suppose that should they be lucky enough to not get IBD I'm sure somewhere down the line they'll have some health issue to deal with...I don't think there's a completely healthy person walking around, especially in north america...our diet and lifestyle in north america is terrible, and the stress that adds to our minds and bodies makes it that much worse.

Red, my mom went to the dr. and I couldn't believe it...They didn't even seem concerned...She lives in a really small town and there aren't many doctors around there...I told her to drive to where I live to get checked...A bigger city and more drs...They didn't even check her with the colonscope (I think that is what it is called, not sure)...He did suggest a colonoscopy, but she hasn't had it yet...If she can, she is going to wait until Jan...Something that has to do with her insurance...I told her she shouldn't wait...She did say, if it got worse, she would go sooner, but.......

Did she see a gastro doctor? If not, she should. And if she's bleeding, she shouldn't wait over two months to investigate.

I too think that she shouldn't wait that long to be checked out. With any sort of bleeding comes the anemia complication which if it's uncontrolled can have some pretty scary outcomes. Keep working on your mom to push for answers. Maybe you can try to set her up with your doc? Are you near each other? If so, see if she's willing to go to your doc and to have you take her?

You have to push to get the right doctor and not stop til the diagnosis makes sense. The first dr I saw told me to take some lactobacillus and come back in 3 months. I was going 20+ times a day had lost 50 pounds, and couldn't event walk to his office without going to to the bathroom. My mom had to argue with my pediatrician to get me to see someone else PRONTO, and I did, and she was the only one out of 3 docs to even remotely help me.

I understand the whole small town thing, I also live in a little town and my doctor let me go for 8 months bleeding and D kept giving me antibiotics, I was to the point I wished I would die because I was so sick, I fineally got hold of a surgen I had seen before and set up my own appointment for a colonoscopy. then when he found out I had UC he hooked me up with a GI. Just dont wait that long. by then I was dehydrated, anemic, and my pottasium was depleated.
