Need advice and help with bad flare up

Hi All,

Im new to the Forum and i was hoping i could get some advice and help from fellow UC sufferers. Im 21 and was diagnosed with UC when i was 15. I have had the usual ups and downs and typical flair ups.

At the moment im going through a very bad flair up, probably the worst i have had and im not sure what to do. My medication i was on was mercaptopurine, which i found was not helping so once i ran out i stopped taking them which probably was not a good idea. I had a 4 weeks dose of Salofalk enemas which did not help either. So i left it and was not on any medication.

At the moment i have put myself back on the prednisone to try and help, which is not having a great effect either. My specialist i normally see is away and i not available till january, i do not have a GP as i normally just see the specialist. I dont want to just go to any old GP and get told something i already know but i dont know what else to do.

This is by far the worst flare up i have had and im starting to get really worried as its not getting any better.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated

You need go to an Accident and Emergency centre where your normal specialist is based or your local hospital where a GI will come and see you immediately they realise you have UC. You never know, a new person may even be a breath of fresh air.

Don't wait until January, make an appt asap and find a good GI to help get you on some correct meds to get relief. My UC was recently out of control and I don't want you to have to go through that, myself and my Doc's agreed on a decision and I believe it was not the best course of action but then they quickly went into action to help get me some relief and we are working on a plan to get me healthy and keep me that way.

Hi there,

sorry to hear you're having such a bad flare..........the only thing i can tell you is that in my experience sometimes the prednisone takes time to kick in....as long as two weeks for me...and that was at a dose of 40mgs per day.  Fortunatley though it has always worked and is the only drug that puts me into remission. 

Also, when i'm experiencing a flare i really watch what i eat.  i've found that a high amount of soluble fiber foods can be helpful, (almost theraputic).

Hey and Welcome! I definitely think you need to calll the doctor's office and ask to see someone else. Jan is way too long to wait. I know I stopped my meds cold turkey one time and it sent me into a flare. Let us know when you can get an appt.

Well im currently on 50mgs of prednisolone a day, which is what my specialist normally puts me on at the start of a dose.

I have made an appointment with a local GP today and am going on thursday so fingers crossed he can help me get this flare under control.

If you feel as if you are getting worse you should go to the emergency room and preferably the one associated with your current GI as someone mentioned above. He should have a back up doctor working for him. I wouldn't play with this. Good luck.

My normal specialist who is away practises out of a small office near the hospital and only goes to the hospital for procedures. He has nobody filling in for him while he is away.

Ive got an appointment with a good GP so hopefully she will be able to help. Ive thought about taking myself to the emergency but i thought that was a bit drastic.

       Well from what i have read and been told, during a flare up Dairy, Fried Foods and Processed Foods are the big no no. During my last flare up (big one) i spent 4 days in the hospital, got put back on Pred and dropped Asacol and GI switched me to Imuran. My diet during the flare up was lots of water, apples, plums, Ensure in the morning, and sometimes was able to get down some soup. Towards the end of the flare up i was able to eat soy yogurt, fruits, veggies, soups, chicken, crackers. When got back to remission recently i encountered a really wide range of food cravings. Unfortunetly these cravings a for not so healthy food. I gave in on some of those and boy did i pay the stomach cramping pain price. Im trying to retain a lean meat and veggie diet but come on, its so extremely difficult to give up a big juicy Cheeseburger or a grilled to perfection T-Bone/Ribeye and my ultimate favorite Pizza.
