Can someone tell me HOW Imuran works?

Imuran is a chemotherapy drug.  But I was tested to see how much of the "enzyme" I already had in my system.  Turns out I have a lot already and can only take a half dose.  What exactly does that means that my body is already producing?  And what is it suppose to do in there?  Beyond it being an immunosupressant to keep me from making antibodies to the remi of course...

I'm kinda clueless and I get up so early for the remi treatments I forget to ask my doc when I'm there.  Not sure he'd explain it where I could get it anyway.

It's a chemotherapy drug they just don't use much anymore. I couldn't seem to find anything on HOW it works, just what it's used for. Guess I'll have to keep looking.

I dont think its chemo, rather an immunosupressant (sp) that is given to transplant patients. It couteracts our over active immune systems. Of course this is simple.

Chemotherapy = chemical + therapy.

Azathioprine limits the proliferation of certain cells, notably leukocytes (white blood cells), through purine inhibition. In effect reducing one's immunological status, limiting the body's ability to fight infection.
