Anyone tried Paxil?

Ive been flaring for about a month and my md wants me to try paxil for my depression.I was wondering if anyone else has tried it and been successful and did ok with your uc and flare not getting worse because of it.

My mom is on Paxil (she doesn't have UC) and said it really helps her. I've been considering it myself.

I was on paxil with good results - but I was moved to cymbalta due to its pain relieving properties associated with depression.  I like it (cymbalta)better

Thanks for the information. I really wanted to try cymbalta but am afraid to ask my md. He gets mad if i tell him what i want.

If your doctor get's mad at you for voicing your own wants.. I would find another doctor ASAP.. You should never have to feel afraid to voice anything to your doctor... shame on him!!! If you want something that isn't good for you, he should explain to you why you can't have whatever you want, but do it in a kind and sensitive way.. not get mad about it...

By the way, I was on Paxil for a while with no problems, but they switched me to Effexor XR because of the pain relieving properties such as shrecky said with cymbalta :)

I would stay away from Effexor because the body develops a dependency on it. There was an article last year in the NYTimes (I believe) about the difficulties people have when they want to get off it. With a low dose, it's possible to wean off slowly but in high doses, it can take people a really long time to taper off it.

Sorry, that was slightly off topic because you asked about Paxil. Is the MD who prescribed it your GI or a different kind of doctor? Personally, I wouldn't trust my GI or a GP to know what's the best anti-anxiety med for me. I would only trust a psychiatrist or psychopharmacologist. I would want to know why my doctor choose Paxil and not Celexa, Lexapro, Zoloft, etc... I ask a lot of questions. :) And I always remember that I'm the customer... so if a doctor gets annoyed at me, I switch doctors.

My md prescribed the paxil. I think i will look into a psychiatrist tomorrow. Im sure thats the best way to go. I should look into changing my md toox while im at it. Thanks so much everyone!

I agree that if your doc makes you pay a price by being nasty to you when you make suggestions, it's time for another doctor. First do no harm, doc -- remember the oath you took?

I think Effexor XR is fabulous. It's given me back my brain and gotten my thinking back on track. But I agree with whoever mentioned it that discontinuation syndrome with Effexor is among the very, very worst. In other words, it's really hard to get off of this drug. If you are not experiencing debilitating depression, I'd try almost any other antidepressant. If you find nothing adequately treats your depression, then it's time to bring out the big guns (Effexor) -- with the proviso and caveat that getting off of Effexor can be a real nightmare!!!

I have been on paxal for at least 10 years with good results. I started it before I was DX uith uc but it hasnt caused a flare my doc didnt see a problem with continuing to take it.

Yes, I have also had great results w/ Effexor for my anxiety, but once I did try to get off "just to see how I would do". Bad idea!

This sounds really crazy i know but about two weeks ago i tried to take the paxil and felt worse and drugged. Two days ago per my drs ok i cut the tablet in half and took ten miligrams and i was so sick and felt so drugged i was scared. I know im depressed but i cant seem to take the Paxil. Its supposed to take two weeks to see any results so why did i feel funny so soon? Maybe im crazy!

You are NOT crazy. Please don't even talk about yourself in such a hurtful and negative way. Okay? Be kind to yourself.

It takes a while to get used to anything new. My best advice is to try taking your Paxil right before bed.

Hang in there. Fortunately, depression is very successfully treated if you commit to finding the right therapist and the right medication.
