does everyone on asacol lose their hair

should my daughter start taking something now to avoid hair loss-what is suggested to prevent it, she just beganasacol last week.thank you

I had no hair loss on asacol at all, I was on it for 5 years. I would wait and see if something happens before trying more meds. The only thing I would suggest is talking to her doc about her taking Calcium + Vit D and folic acid, they had me on that while on asacol and also now as well that I am on Imuran.

I take 12 Asacol a day and have never had an issue with hair loss. I have always lost hair in the shower, but since being dx in 2000, I would not say that it has increased. I have not heard of taking anything to avoid hair loss. Is she losing a lot?

Biotin helps w/ hair loss and as a bonus makes your nails stronger. You can pick it up at drugstores, grocery stores or somewhere like GNC. I am on Colazal (a maintaince med similar to Asacol) and it has never caused my hair to find out.

I had tons of hair loss with Asacol. It was so bad I really should have worn a hair net while I was in the kitchen. My GI switched me to Colazal and it stopped almost immediately.

I haven't experienced any hair loss with 12 Asacol per day. I've been on it since March.

I've had just the usual hair loss typical of a 31 year old male.  Nothing extreme or out of the ordinary, with the exception of a day here or there.

I haven't had any hair loss and I've been on 4 gms daily for 2.5 years.

I don't think I have experienced hair loss on Asacol!!  Have been on it since 2003 and have only experienced hair loss this year but think it was due to the Prednisolone and being so ill.

I agree with some of the other comments about not taking anything extra for the timebeing as it is just extra pills to have to take.  Good luck.

Medication:

Asacol 2 x 3 daily

Is she also on prednisone? I've had hair loss on prednisone but not on asacol alone.

No hair loss for me on asacol, i guess you just have to try it and if that happens switch her to something else. There are plenty of different meds out there for her to try.

It's hard to do this, but please try to remember not to get caught up in all of the possible side effects.  As you will learn from all of us here, we all have very different experiences with this disease and with the medications that we use to control it.  When I was first diagnosed, I was so afraid to try any medications because I was convinced I would get all the horrible side effects.  I've taken Asacol, Rowasa and Prednisone and have had very few side effects at all.  There is no way of knowing how these drugs are going to effect your daughter.  It's really just trial and error.  And my view is... no sense getting all worked up over the unknown!
