Hello!

I have a problem with my hospital that I go to. There seem to be a problem with communication between everyone at the hospital. When I ask someone a question and they say I will get a letter from my doctor with answer I never get the answer. When they say they will call, they never call. Last time I was about to do a coloscopy I get to know it the day before and it can't be done cause it's not enough time for preparation. Then I book a new time the 21 november and some days later I get a letter that says im booked for a rectoscopy the 29 november. And much more...

I'm really tired of going there and only leave with more questions.

My advice would be for you to find a new doctor that uses a different hospital. There are plenty of great GIs out there who are very responsive. My GI responds via telephone within 24 hours and even to email within 24 hours. I've never had an issue with the hospital either. You can find better treatment elsewhere.

Gastroenterologist. In the U.S., that is the type of Dr. that specializes in gut problems.

Okey! Well I dont have any direct contact to him/her via mail or phone. I have a number to a nurse that I can call between 11-12 every weekday. My GI is also on vacation often. Maybe you have better contact and better information from your doctors in US. I think that's one of the major problems in Sweden that they dont focus enough at the patient.

The distance between hospitals here is huge but if contact via phone and email would improve, that would maybe be a soulution.

Andersson, this may be a "typical American" answer that isn't appropriate in your system, but is there someone higher you can contact? You have a state-operated system, so someone is over your doctor and your nurse, as well as your hospital. Sometimes complaining to someone higher up will help. I would think there has to be an office to receive patient complaints or grievances.

I dont know who to contact that's higher then my doctor and I dont know if that would give any effect. But one thing I could do is to write a letter to a politician that's responsible for medical service. Anyone else got any advice?

Yes, the politician is good, especially if he's elected. Go to the library, check on line, call a local college that has government classes, ask people who their superior is. The information has to be available somewhere, you live in a socialist state, not a police state. You're paying for the service with your taxes, you deserve to have a qualitiy service.

For the long term, consider finding out about local IBD organizations. If there aren't any, start one. Put ads in the paper, on the internet, on bulletin boards, call the local media. Say you're starting a support group for IBD people. Then when it's well formed, it can start applying political pressure in the appropriate places to improve the services you all get.
