This happens to me every once in a while.

Last night I woke up about 4 hours after having gone to bed with an extremely itchy *anus* that may have actually woken me up.

I stayed awake for a while and it eventually went away.  I think I woke up 1 more time during the night.

Sometimes I get a little transient itchiness after a bowel movement as well.

I've checked things out the internet, and it seems like they say a lot of things ie Irritation can cause this.  The only *specific* type of parasite I could come up with that can cause nighttime itchiness is the Pinworm.

Among all of the types of parasites that can cause UC like symptoms, I have not read anything about Pinworms.  I am getting blood drawn this week and will get a parasite (stool) test. 

I just wanted your guys comments on this.  Part of me thinks, with all I have going on in my intestines, yeah, its just irritation.  But the fact that I've gotten this *intense* itching at *night* really makes me wonder.  I have been to Mexico many, many times, and eaten there.  My last trip was 1 year before I landed in the ER, and my first trip was when I was 14 (and I ate there that time as well). 

What do you guys think?

PS - I was supposedly tested for parasites in the hospital.  I did, however, overhear a nurse telling another nurse that "you can't send liquid stool samples to the lab, they won't test it"  as I had nothing but diarrhea at that time.  My Colonoscopy resulted in my GI deciding that I most likely had active colitis, no evidence of infectious.

This sounds sort of gross, but this will happen to me sometimes if I "leak" a tiny bit or have a shart. What always works for me is cleansing thoroughly, with a wet wipe or soap and water, and applying some barrier - I use A&D ointment.

funny because a few months before i was diagnosed w/ uc, i had the same exact problems... in fact all the research i did online lead me to believe I had pinworms, so i went to CVS, and bought some pinworms medicine (over the counter) and i seem to remember that it went away, and a few months later my uc symptoms were horrible and i then got diagnosed w/ uc

Could just be irritation - particularly if you have hemmorhoids that flare/heal. Could also be yeast-related.

It wouldn't hurt to request parasite testing, although a naturopathic/alternative doctor would conduct more thorough testing than a traditional gastro doc, in my experience.

hemmies can cause itching, sometimes even fissures can cause some itching...it's best if you get it checked out by your doc.

It could just be irritation. This happens to me about twice a year, depending on when I'm flaring. It goes away with over-the-counter anti-itch cream. I think the one I use is called Nupercainal. It might be worse at night simply because the body's natural cortisone (or is it cortisol?) levels decrease at night.

I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. Talking to your doctor would be the best thing.

I get random itching every now and then.  My GI said it is just slight irritation from a bowel movement.  I find a hot bath helps it go away for me.
