Im curious, Who here has UC and has a parent and or child who also has it?  No one else in my family has it and I PRAY my kids dont get it!

I'm the only one in my family.

My father has/had UC but has been in remission for the past 14 years (i.e. no symptoms, colonoscopy showed no disease). He also thinks one of his grandparents might have had something similar (just called "colitis" back then).

I'm the only one in my family. And I'm not a European Jew, another often-quoted risk factor. I spend a while after my diagnosis saying "Why me?"

My mom had it (she had surgery in 1986) she had it way worse than me. No one else in my family has it, my brother and my sister both do not have it and both are on and off smokers......I am the lucky one.

There was a good thread going a few weeks ago about how people felt about having children and wondering if they would pass it on.

No parents, siblings, grand parents, aunts or uncles have it, but my daughter and I got it within a week of each other.

I have an uncle on my Dad's side that has UC. That whole side of the family tends to have "stomach problems," but no other official diagnoses.

I believe I got Uc from my mother who had Crohns. My great grandmother also had some form of Colitis or Crohns. Neither of my children have it but I have the fear that my daughter may get it when she's older because she is already experiencing a bunch of gastro issues. But I'm praying that both of them manage to dodge my family's legacy!

Out of both my husbands side of the family and mine, 2 of our 3 kids and 1 of my husband's sister's 4 kids have it. No one else does that we know of.

My mom has UC (she didn't get it until she was in her mid 60's) and I have crohns (specifically crohns-colitis, CD affecting the colon) and I got it in my early 20's, I actually got sick and DX before my mom did.

My nephew has it also. I think my dad had it, but he never got diagnosed.

I have UC and my older cousin has Chrons. Our grandfather had either UC or Colitis but was never formally diagnosed. We do however know that he suffered from bowel problems since his teens and was discharged from the army for dysentery. He died when my father was 16 (38 years ago), and the topic was nearly forgotten about until recently because he hid it from his children.

Only when I and my cuz were diagnosed did grandmother make this connection and tell us about this.

No other incidence in my family.I have two Aunties and an Uncle on my Mothers side,two Uncles and an Auntie on my Fathers side.From this generation,I have ten cousins.I also have two brothers.I am the only one from my generation or the two preceding generations(that I'm aware of)that has an IBD.

Families are very large collections of people,there are bound to be times when this disease hits more than one person in a family.My personal view is that there isn't sufficient evidence to suggest it's a generic illness.Some of you will disagree,especially those with offspring that become afflicted,and I really do sympathize with you.However,for those of you wishing to start a family,I think it would be somewhat rash not to,in fear of your offspring developing this disease.

Easy for me to say!I'm a 36 year old single male,so the right time to start a family has almost sailed ship and,to be honest,was never really a desire of mine.But I can say this,if I did want to start one,my UC wouldn't even be a consideration.As I said before,I'm the only one in my family with an IBD,so I see no evidence to worry.

I guess you all have your own story,many with a very different perspective,but that's how I view things from my own family history.

my grandman on my dads side has it and her sister. that whole side of the family has gastro, colitis, bowel problems and diseases.
i guess i take after that side.
