Help me cannot control flares!

Hello for the past few nights I cannot control my flares they are all in the form of liquid diarrehea blood and mucus. I have lost a few pounds in a few days.

I am on predisone. My doctor took me off of Colazol because it was no working?

I am seeing him Tuesday.

What is the next step?

SHould I ask him to up the predisone or go striaght to Remicade?

I was on Colazol for 3 weeks nothing and predisone the same thing.

Colazol just gave me diarrhea.

I am going at night I cannot sleep!


Someone please help me!!!!!!

You can talk to him about a number of things. Prednisone can be a quick patch a lot of times, he may suggest upping your dose and starting asacol as well. I would ask for enemas of some sort, either mesaline (same kinda thing as colazol and asacol) or even a steroid enema or foam.

He may bring up imuran or 6mp but those take months to kick in. Remicade works faster than both of those but it's a big step you need to talk your doc about and get all the info. It has helped a lot of people and i'm sure they can chime in. I'm looking at possibly starting myself in the next month or so.

If it gets really bad and you can't get ahold of your gi over the weekend don't be afraid to go to the er. loosing weight so fast and so much blood lost can be very detrimental.

the colazal might have been making everything worse, so if that's why your dr took you off you should see some improvement in a few days. So by tuesday you should know if it was the colazal. (I got better in just 2 days after stopping it, so hopefully if that's what was adding to your flare you will to)
How much prednisone are you taking now?
I'm not sure, but if you're flaring really badly you'd probably continue the pred for awhile longer even if you do start remicade right away.
Make sure you drink plenty of fluids since you're having lots of D, and start taking a multivitamin if you aren't already just to help replenish some of your lost nutrients.
To help calm the D at night, try not to eat for at least 3 hours before you go to bed. That's really the only thing that's helped me.

I'm taking 40mg I don't think that's enough. I will ask about asacol does that work pretty quickly?

He talked to about remicide and imuran but I was only on Colazol for 2 weeks I'm not ready for that change.

Hi feelline,
Once to stabalise my UC the doctor gave me high-dose intravenous steroids and within 2 days I started noticing the difference. If you think this is an option then it may be worth talking about it with your doctor.

Flares suck I hope it gets under control soon.
40mg of Pred. was never enough to get me out of a flare
and upping that may be the first step since you are already on it.

L-glutamine can help get diarrhea under control. Mucosaheal and George's aloe vera juice can help heal inflammation.

I agree that not enough pred will keep you in a flare. Much as we hate it, getting enough into your body can certainly get the inflammation under control. Heck, I'd even move myself up to 60 today if I were you, and if it is what you need, it will probably have an almost immediate effect.

You probably need some rectal meds, too. Time to go in and see your doc ASAP. Until then, bump up your pred, would be my advise.

Colazal gave me diareah bad.  I strongly advice staying hydrated. drink lots of water!

If i read correctly you were just diagnosed with  UC. I also have UC. Only found out after first flare. Hit me out of the blue. I dont think you have been on meds long enough to control your flare. It took me almost 6 months to get back to "normal". I know it's scary but this may take ahwile. Give it some time , things will get better. feel better, good luck.

First off,  I soooo feel your pain!!  I was in your place about 3 months ago.   First off,  you probably need your prednisone upped.   I was on 20mg twice a day,  but then it wasn't working,  so then finally had to be hospitalized.  I hated it,  but knew that was the best place for me.   I was then put on IV steroids.  They helped,  but then once again I backslid into worsening symptoms again.  So while in hospital they started me on remicade.  Then was able to get out.  And since then have tapered off the pred, and staying on remicade (along with all my other meds), with the remicade infusions as outpatient every couple months.  And doing good!!  I wish you luck.   Hope you can get this flare under control SOON.
