VSL#3 in the UK on prescription?

Whilst googling VSL#3 (and how bloody expensive it is!) I found this link

which suggest you may be able to get it on prescription from your GP in the UK.
I'm seeing mine on Monday and I'll ask, but does anyone have any experience of this?

Cammy, I took VSL#3 for three months. Although it's been shown in research to be effective and it has helped a lot of the people here, the only effect I noticed was that it gave me cramping and gas. I'm taking Nature's Way Primidophilus Reuteri now and it works well for me.

If you can get the script from your doctor, that will be great. If not, consider trying one of the less expensive preparations that are available.

How are you doing now? Feeling any better?

Hi Judy, I thought I was beginning to feel better! I seen the consultant on Tuesday and he took me off Pentasa/started azathioprine: he thought the pentasa was might be sending me to the toilet 4 times a day/terrible urgency/lots pain/wind regular bleeding 1 out of 3 visits.
The day after I stopped taking it, I only went twice and noticed a big decrease on the wind/cramp/pain...I thought "brilliant".
Unfortunately, now back as it was, 4 or 5 times a day but lots more blood. I can't get my head round this disease?!

Cammy, that's exactly what Asacol did to me. They're both mesalamine, so it makes sense. You may want to revisit the meds with your doctor. It usually takes 3-6 months for the azathioprine to be effective, and that's a pretty low dose of prednisolone to try to control things until it begins working.

I'm guessing Colazal isn't available as a choice within your health care system since your doctor hasn't mentioned it. That's too bad because several of us who don't tolerate mesalamine do well on Colazal.

Hope you find the right combination very soon. I know exactly what you're going through, and no one deserves that!

Thanks for the info, I'll speak with my GP when I next see him, I have heard others have had positive results from it.
